Potter a top coach - Klopp

Liverpool and Chelsea continued their disappointing seasons as the injury-hit mid-table teams played out an uninspiring 0-0 draw at Anfield in the Premier League.

Chelsea thought they had raced into a third-minute lead when Kai Havertz fired home from close range after a corner, only for VAR to rule the German offside.

Liverpool seemed shorn of confidence as they looked to avoid three straight league defeats, only creating half chances with new signing Cody Gakpo missing the best of them in the opening period.

The visitors introduced big-money January arrival Mykhailo Mudryk in the second half but, while he looked lively, the Ukrainian was unable to lift the Blues, who earned a point that leaves them 10th in the standings, with Liverpool eighth.

Relive the action as Liverpool draw with Chelsea at Anfield:

Liverpool 0-0 Chelsea

60 mins: Chance! Mason Mount floats a cross field pass over to Hakim Ziyech who brings the ball under control and shifts inside from the right.

He goes past a couple of defenders before hitting one with his left foot and lifting it over the crossbar!

51 mins: Stellar footwork from James Milner sees him weave in between Mason Mount and Marc Cucurella on the right wing before he loses possession to Lewis Hall.

The play switches over to the opposite side of the pitch and Andy Robertson recovers the ball. He brings it to the byline before pulling one back to Cody Gakpo but the forward can’t get a shot away and Chelsea work it clear.

Liverpool 0-0 Chelsea

48 mins: Liverpool have come out quickly from the half-time break. They’ve camped themselves inside Chelsea’s half and are whipping crosses into the box.

Elliott swings in the most recent effort but Trevoh Chalobah gets the ball down and boots it clear.

Second half: Liverpool 0-0 Chelsea

Liverpool get the match restarted and send the ball back to Ibrahima Konate. He carries it into midfield and knocks a long ball up the pitch.

He doesn’t catch it right and overhits the pass but Kepa Arrizabalaga is off his line and has to worringly back track to make sure the ball is heading out of play.

That could have been awkward for the Chelsea goalkeeper.

HT Liverpool 0-0 Chelsea

Liverpool’s first and only shot on target in this match came in the 39th minute, through Thiago. Only against Newcastle (0) have they had fewer shots on target in a Premier League home game this season.

The Reds have lost each of their last three Premier League games when level at half time, having lost just two of the 21 games they were level at the break in beforehand (W12 D7).

This is Jürgen Klopp’s 1,000th game as a manager (270 with Mainz 05, 319 with Borussia Dortmund and 411 with Liverpool), coming 21 years and 327 days after his first (Mainz 1-0 Duisburg on 28th February 2001).

Will he be celebrating with a win later on?
