Relive the USA’s historic victory over the Netherlands in Lyon

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The USA have won the 2019 Women's World Cup after a battling victory over the Netherlands in Lyon.
Second half goals from Megan Rapinoe and Rose Lavelle were enough to see the 2015 winners through to a win which sees them successfully defend the crown won in Canada four years ago.
The 2-0 win sees them lift the World Cup for a second time in a row and a fourth time in their history.

This may well be given. The boot is very, very high and there's plenty of contact.
The correct decision, and a good use of VAR, you'd say. The referee was unsighted. It was an awkward challenge, and sharp work from Alex Morgan to get across the defender.
Stefanie van der Gragt is booked. Megan Rapinoe will take...
GOAL! USA 1-0 Netherlands (Megan Rapinoe, 61 minutes)
And Megan Rapinoe will score!
Confident and composed, the goalkeeper guess middle, Rapinoe goes to her left, and the USA lead.
Rapinoe moves level with teammate Alex Morgan and Ellen White on six goals in the tournament. Was there every any doubt that she'd score today?
64 minutes
I'd argue Rapinoe has actually had a pretty lacklustre game this evening. She's struggled to assert herself and looked a little off the pace, perhaps feeling that slight injury that ruled her out of the semi-final. But she's got the goal, and the USA are big favourites, now, you'd say.

Nearly magnificent!
A weaving run from Vivianne Miedema takes her past one, then two, then three and four, and finally five, and it seems the trigger is about to be pulled as space opens 15 yards out on her left foot.
But she shirks the opportunity and looks to dive back inside, beating another but crowded out as the American defenders recover to smother her eventual stab at goal. A sparkling run, but the Netherlands still haven't tested Alyssa Naeher.
68 minutes
The spaces are opening. Crystal Dunn sparks an attack for the US, moving inside from her left-back position and finding Rose Lavelle, and Alex Morgan is very nearly played in behind, peeling too wide and allowing Stephanie van der Gragt to get a foot in before Morgan can take a touch.
GOAL! USA 2-0 Netherlands (Rose Lavelle, 69 minutes)
A lovely goal, and the USA have two!
This is a crisp finish from Rose Lavelle, capitalising on the sudden openness of the game.
She picks up the ball between the lines and the tiring Dutch midfield can't get back at her. Taking her time, she rolls the ball forward to draw the defenders and then rifles it into the bottom corner past Sari van Veeenendaal.
71 minutes
Tobin Heath very nearly extends the US lead further, van Veenendall just about doing enough to keep her out as the Dutch look suddenly open at the back.
In the wake of that goal the Netherlands made a change, introducing Jill Roord into midfield and reshuffling their forward line, with Vivianne Miedema moving centrally and Lieke Martens going off.
