From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The USA have won the 2019 Women's World Cup after a battling victory over the Netherlands in Lyon.

Second half goals from Megan Rapinoe and Rose Lavelle were enough to see the 2015 winners through to a win which sees them successfully defend the crown won in Canada four years ago.

The 2-0 win sees them lift the World Cup for a second time in a row and a fourth time in their history.

The Dutch have to go for broke, and remove centre-half Anouk Dekker to bring on Shanice van de Sanden, who goes up front.

There is a vague shape to this Dutch side, now, but you'd be hard-pressed to assign a standard footballing formation to it.

And they are so, so open now. Crystal Dunn dances into a huge gap and onwards into the area, feigning the shot and creating a one-on-one with van Veenendaal, who again saves brilliantly.

The USA appear destined for back-to-back World Cup victories after two quick fire second-half goals.

Cheers from the Dutch fans as their side have their first real shot at goal, Lineth Beerensteyn cutting inside and firing straight at Alyssa Naeher from 20-yards-or-so.

Huge cheers as Megan Rapinoe is replaced, a standing ovation from the crowd and a great beaming smile across her face as her number comes up on the board. Christen Press replaces her on the left of the front three.

Great effort!

That's not far away at all from Sherida Spitse, curling a free kick over the wall but keeping it relatively low, and it's past the diving Alyssa Naeher to her right, but also about a yard past the post. The Dutch aren't dead just yet.

Goalscorer. Leader. Hero.

Tobin Heath is freed 40 yards from goal down the right and dribbles all the way to the six-yard box as the ailing Dutch struggle to get back, but Stefanie van der Gragt manages to heroically prevent the shot, and push her back to the edge of the box, recovering players cutting off the angles for square passes and eventually causing the attack to fizzle out.

This time Heath comes from the left as she and Alex Morgan combine neatly on halfway but it is again Stefanie van der Gragt in the way impressively, Heath out on her feet and unable to get the yard she needs to shoot, even as van der Gragt commits herself and nearly takes a tumble. Again, no shot is released.

Tobin Heath wasn't long for the game. She's run herself into the ground and virtually has to drag herself off, rather grateful to the new laws enabling her to just trudge off at the nearest point rather than having to jog across to the far touchline.

Another big cheer from the crowd - it is Carli Lloyd to come on. Her 281st and likely final appearance, and on to see out the last few minutes of what looks like another World Cup win.
