Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham are all in the spotlight on this transfer deadline day and you can follow the latest right here throughout the day.

The January window closes at 11pm GMT and before then Liverpool are hoping to sign a centre-back, with Preston defender Ben Davies arriving permanently with Schalke’s Ozan Kabak joining him until the summer. Manchester United are looking to complete final exits with defender Marcos Rojo set to join Boca Juniors in his native Argentina, and Phil Jones and Sergio Romero set to depart in the summer if not today. Arsenal are also facing a decision on a defender’s departure as bids come in for Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Southampton, West Brom, Newcastle and Leicester are all thought to be jostling in the queue for the England international.

Elsewhere Leicester want Watford midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah, Paris Saint-Germain’s Idrissa Gueye has rejected a loan move to Newcastle United, and Christian Eriksen’s future remains up in the air with Tottenham interested in securing his services on loan until the end of the season, after last night’s disappointing defeat at Brighton. Newcastle defender DeAndre Yedlin is heading for Galatasaray but Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour is staying put after a U-turn from new boss Thomas Tuchel. And in France, Paris Saint-Germain are interested in taking Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos to join Mauricio Pochettino’s team.

WEST BROM HOPEFUL ABOUT MAITLAND-NILES

West Brom are the new favourites to sign Ainsley Maitland-Niles on loan reports The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

Interest from Leicester and Southampton lowered the chances of Maitland-Niles joining the Baggies but with Southampton pulling out of talks and Arsenal not wanting to strengthen Leicester, West Brom’s hopes have been reignited.

Talks between the two clubs are ongoing and the 23-year-old Maitland-Niles is happy to proceed. If an agreement can be found in the coming hours, he will undergo a medical before completing a temporary transfer to The Hawthorns.

NO DEADLINE DAY SIGNINGS FOR UNITED

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given an update on Manchester United deadline day plans and he warns not to expect much to happen saying there are no plans to bring anyone else into the club. He said:

I can confirm there won't be anyone in so don't stay up late,

"Phil [Jones] has been recovering from a knee injury after an operation he had. He's working hard to be included again, he will be on the list and hopefully he'll get his fitness back sooner rather than later.

"We've made decisions we feel have been good for individuals with the young players moving on and giving them the chance to play more football is important for us.

"Our group is a tight knit group, we don't have too many players in excess and hopefully Jesse can get going at West Ham as well."

ARSENAL OUTGOINGS LATEST

Arsenal are focused on getting some of their fringe players out on loan before the transfer deadline.

As it stands, Reiss Nelson is staying at Arsenal. The Gunners open to loan offers, but so far, nothing that suited the player has materialised.

Calum Chambers is also likely to stay in this window. Like Nelson, he could have been allowed out but no suitable offers.

Lucas Torreira is likely to see out his season long loan at Atletico Madrid despite limited game time.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has interest from Newcastle and West Brom. Southampton have pulled out of talks for the midfielder with Arsenal unwilling to sanction a move to Leicester who they see as rivals for the Premier League European places.
