From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. After such a fantastic first half of the season, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side now find themselves trapped in a desperate slump, losing all of their last six league games in succession, including a harrowing 9-0 defeat by Manchester United. The Saints briefly topped the table at one stage but have now dropped down to 13th, with their hopes of securing European football now all but extinguished.
However, Chelsea’s fortunes have improved markedly since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel, even if a title charge is already beyond the Blues. The club have won five out of six games in all competitions since Frank Lampard was sacked and currently sit fourth, just four points adrift of second-placed Manchester United. There was relief for Timo Werner, too, in a 2-0 victory against Newcastle last time out, with the forward finally bringing his torrid goal drought to an end. Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz have both returned to full training ahead of the fixture, but Tuchel will already have one eye on Tuesday’s Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid and may choose to rotate his starting line-up. Poor from Gomes, who gives the ball away and then drags Thiago to the ground. The referee plays advantage, but Liverpool can’t capitalise, unable to break down a stubborn Everton defence. Gomes is fortunate to escape without a booking, too.

The Everton corner that follows comes out to Digne, who lashes a shot wide.
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (33’)
Chance! Digne whips a superb cross to the back post and Coleman powers a header at goal from a few yards out. He looks certain to score, but Alisson makes an excellent reaction save to deny the right-back.
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (31’)
Alexander-Arnold goes for goal, whipping the free kick over the wall but beyond the crossbar too.
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (31’)
Holgate slides in on Mane and gives away a free kick, about 25 yards out. Alexander-Arnold and Robertson stand over it...
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (30’)
After a few seconds trying to run off his injury, Henderson gives up, clearly reluctant to make it any worse. He’s replaced by Phillips, and Liverpool lose their captain. More problems at centre-back for Klopp.
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (28’)
Henderson will carry on, surprisingly. He doesn’t look particularly comfortable, though.
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (27’)
Nat Phillips is warming up. This doesn’t look good for Henderson.
