After such a fantastic first half of the season, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side now find themselves trapped in a desperate slump, losing all of their last six league games in succession, including a harrowing 9-0 defeat by Manchester United. The Saints briefly topped the table at one stage but have now dropped down to 13th, with their hopes of securing European football now all but extinguished.
However, Chelsea’s fortunes have improved markedly since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel, even if a title charge is already beyond the Blues. The club have won five out of six games in all competitions since Frank Lampard was sacked and currently sit fourth, just four points adrift of second-placed Manchester United. There was relief for Timo Werner, too, in a 2-0 victory against Newcastle last time out, with the forward finally bringing his torrid goal drought to an end. Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz have both returned to full training ahead of the fixture, but Tuchel will already have one eye on Tuesday’s Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid and may choose to rotate his starting line-up. KICK-OFF
Liverpool, with 45 minutes to avoid another damaging Anfield defeat, get us back underway.
HALF-TIME: LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON
That’s it for the first half. Liverpool have been subdued and hesitant again, and they’re on course for a fourth successive league defeat at Anfield. Everton, meanwhile, have a real opportunity to end their dismal recent record at this stadium. Richarlison’s early goal has put them on course.
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (45+4’)
Everyone switches off as the ball appears to be running out of play for a corner following a Liverpool attack. But Alexander-Arnold keeps it in, catching out Everton’s defence. The cross is poor, though, and the visitors head clear.
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (45+2’)
Everton work the free-kick short, setting Gomes away on the right. His low cross is easily cleared.
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (45+1’)
There’ll be four added minutes. Everton are ending the half well, enjoying a spell of possession. Kabal has gifted them a free-kick, too, with a reckless challenge on Coleman. The Liverpool defender gets a yellow card.
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (42’)
Mane breezes past a couple of players and knocks the ball through Gomes’ legs. Salah, drifting in from the right, lifts a cross towards the back post, but it’s too close to Pickford.
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (41’)
Gomes does go into the book now, having committed one too many fouls. This time it’s a blatant barge into Salah.
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (39’)
Mane skips past Holgate and crosses towards Salah. Gomes is in the way of it and does well to readjust before hacking clear. Moments later, Keane takes a little too long to clear, with Firmino pressing. The Brazilian gets a foot to the ball and it flies just over the bar.
