After such a fantastic first half of the season, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side now find themselves trapped in a desperate slump, losing all of their last six league games in succession, including a harrowing 9-0 defeat by Manchester United. The Saints briefly topped the table at one stage but have now dropped down to 13th, with their hopes of securing European football now all but extinguished.
However, Chelsea’s fortunes have improved markedly since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel, even if a title charge is already beyond the Blues. The club have won five out of six games in all competitions since Frank Lampard was sacked and currently sit fourth, just four points adrift of second-placed Manchester United. There was relief for Timo Werner, too, in a 2-0 victory against Newcastle last time out, with the forward finally bringing his torrid goal drought to an end. Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz have both returned to full training ahead of the fixture, but Tuchel will already have one eye on Tuesday’s Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid and may choose to rotate his starting line-up. Everton are constantly trying to pick out the runs of Richarlison in behind. The wind is making that difficult, though.
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (21’)
Alexander-Arnold lifts a pass into the path of Robertson, who controls with his chest but can’t escape the attention of Coleman. Pickford is then tested again, pushing a powerful Alexander-Shot over the bar. Liverpool are starting to pick things up a little now.
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (20’)
Great save! Everton can only half clear a Liverpool corner, and the ball drops to Henderson inside the D. He hits a sweetly-struck volley, forcing Pickford to fly to his right and tip it beyond the post.
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (19’)
Chance! Salah finds Mane, who manages to swivel away from a couple of Everton defenders on the edge of the box. The ball comes to Firmino and he skews a shot wide.
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (17’)
Kabak clumsily bundles Rodriguez over. The Colombian picks himself up and goes for goal from the free kick, sending a low, trickling shot straight at Alisson.
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (16’)
Liverpool look almost self-conscious at Anfield of late, almost aware that their apparent invincibility on home turf has been exposed as an illusion. They’re struggling to get going here.
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (13’)
Kabak struggles to deal with another high ball, letting Richarlison to sneak in behind and latch onto it. This time, the Brazilian can’t find room to get a shot off.
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (11’)
Digne gets the slightest of touches on a wayward Thiago pass to send it behind for a corner. Wijnaldum attacks the set piece at the near post but can only glance a header wide.
LIVERPOOL 0-1 EVERTON (9’)
Doucoure is caught out and Salah races away down the left. He finds Mane, who accelerates into space and drives a cross into the six-yard box. Pickford parries it away.
