Jurgen Klopp's side had already pulled off one miraculous comeback this week but couldn't do it again after City won at Brighton. The Reds did their part however with Sadio Mane tapping home the opener after just 17 minutes before the Senegalese added a second 10 minutes from time.

27 mins: Liverpool 1 - 0 Wolves
van Dijk clears a Wolves ball into the box but news from Brighton as Man City go behind! Glenn Murray with the goal for Brighton.
30 mins: Liverpool 1 - 0 Wolves
Well that didn't last long. Aguero levels for Man City.
Liverpool are still on top though as Boly hits a long ball forward that Robertson heads away. Neves puts it back forward aiming for Jota but the pass is too heavy.
33 mins: Liverpool 1 - 0 Wolves
Since the goal Wolves have defended well. Doherty takes the ball off Origi but the visitors can't keep it. Robertson comes in from the left, gives it to Wijnaldum who then wins a corner for Liverpool.
Alexander-Arnold swings it in, it's headed out to the edge of the box and Salah hits it on the volley but puts it over the bar.
36 mins: Liverpool 1 - 0 Wolves
Dendoncker puts the ball into the box for Wolves but Alexander-Arnold kicks it away. Jota then plays a through ball into Jimenez to the left of the box and he then pulls it back but no Wolves player is there to meet it.
Man City have scored again and now lead 2-1 against Brighton.
39 mins: Liverpool 1 - 0 Wolves
Fabinho passes the ball to Salah who faces up to Coady before trying to slip Origi into the box but his pass is too heavy and it goes out of play.
42 mins: Liverpool 1 - 0 Wolves
Robertson puts a ball into the box but it's cleared by Willy Boly. Jota is sent down the left on the counter for Wolves but Alexander-Arnold gets back and takes the ball off him.
45 mins: Liverpool 1 - 0 Wolves
Wolves attack the left again and then work the ball square quickly, Moutinho passes it to the right of the box and Doherty meets it with a shot that hits the crossbar.
Wolves then win a corner as Liverpool look a little flustered but Alexander-Arnold clears it away.
45+1 mins: Liverpool 1 - 0 Wolves
1 added minute is played with no major inroads from either side and Liverpool go into the break with a one-goal lead.
Unfortunately for them though Man City lead against Brighton as well.
The equation is no different at half-time. Liverpool still need to win but a silver lining for the Reds is that Brighton have proven they can score against Man City.
