Over the break it was one of their stars in Jack Grealish who was making all the headlines, shining with England and quickly becoming a favourite of the national team’s fans.
Domestically, Villa have won five of their seven games so far and a win will take them level with Leicester City, who went into the break top of the table.
Brighton have struggled to find an end product to go with their at-times excellent build-up play and have just one win from eight games so far, 16th in the table at the start of play. Follow the end of Newcastle vs Chelsea and the build-up to the game at Villa Park below:
ASTON VILLA 1-1 BRIGHTON (54’)
Villa attack down the right through Traore but Brighton deal with a couple of crosses into the box. At the other end, Lamptey is lively and effervescent again, prodding a pass through to Welbeck. Martinez comes out quickly to claim.
ASTON VILLA 1-1 BRIGHTON (52’)
Mings fires a back pass towards Martinez but gets way too much power on it, conceding a corner. Gross’ delivery almost drops for Webster, but it’s hacked clear before he can react.
GOAL! ASTON VILLA 1-1 BRIGHTON (KONSA 47’)
What a start to the half for Villa! Traore whips a free kick into the box and Konsa meets it at the back post, sliding in and guiding the ball past the helpless Ryan.
KICK-OFF
Villa get the ball rolling for the second half. Brighton have made a change, bringing on Veltman in place of Lallana, who apparently has a groin injury.
HALF-TIME
Brighton have the lead at the break. It’s been a thoroughly entertaining game, with both sides eager to play on the front foot. The visitors have their noses in front, but Villa have had several chances of their own.
ASTON VILLA 0-1 BRIGHTON (45+1’)
Lamptey is the creator again, crossing from the right towards Welbeck at the back post. His header back across is straight to a Villa player, though.
ASTON VILLA 0-1 BRIGHTON (45’)
Targett is booked for a late and overly robust challenge. There’ll be one minuted added on.
ASTON VILLA 0-1 BRIGHTON (43’)
Grealish works some space on the edge of the box, with Brighton’s almost fearful defenders backing off. His shot is tame, but deflects behind for another corner. McGinn’s delivery is disappointing, though, and easily cleared.
