Over the break it was one of their stars in Jack Grealish who was making all the headlines, shining with England and quickly becoming a favourite of the national team’s fans.
Domestically, Villa have won five of their seven games so far and a win will take them level with Leicester City, who went into the break top of the table.
Brighton have struggled to find an end product to go with their at-times excellent build-up play and have just one win from eight games so far, 16th in the table at the start of play. Follow the end of Newcastle vs Chelsea and the build-up to the game at Villa Park below:
ASTON VILLA 0-1 BRIGHTON (40’)
Close again! Luiz plays a pass through to Grealish on the right, and the Villa captain sets off on a typically direct run. His ball across is perfect for Watkins, but White makes an outstanding tackle to prevent what looks a certain goal. The ball trickles just wide with Ryan beaten.
ASTON VILLA 0-1 BRIGHTON (38’)
Close! Grealish curls the free kick into the box and Mings meets it with his left foot, sending the ball looping into the air. Ryan gets across and, in unorthodox fashion, kicks clear off the line.
ASTON VILLA 0-1 BRIGHTON (38’)
Grealish glides forward with the ball and wins a free kick off Gross about 25 yards out from goal…
ASTON VILLA 0-1 BRIGHTON (35’)
The end-to-end nature of the game continues. First, Welbeck is almost set clear down the left, but Mings comes across to dispossess him. Then Trezeguet latches onto a long ball, cuts onto his right foot and slams a shot just over the bar.
ASTON VILLA 0-1 BRIGHTON (32’)
Yet again, Lamptey is set free on the right flank. This time his ball in is beyond his teammates in the box, but Villa need to find a solution to that problem on their left side.
ASTON VILLA 0-1 BRIGHTON (31’)
Another chance! The ball is switched out to Lamptey, whose cut back is perfect for Lallana. The former Liverpool man tries to guide his first-time finish into the bottom corner with his left foot but sends it flashing wide.
ASTON VILLA 0-1 BRIGHTON (30’)
Brighton knock the ball around in their own half, perhaps trying to settle things down. It’s been half an hour of end-to-end, relentlessly attacking football so far.
ASTON VILLA 0-1 BRIGHTON (27’)
Now Grealish tests Ryan with a curling effort from the left towards the far corner. It’s parried away by the watchful goalkeeper.
ASTON VILLA 0-1 BRIGHTON (26’)
Trezeguet lashes a shot well over the bar. This game is being played at a frantic pace, with chances at both ends, which probably isn’t overly surprising given Villa’s last game here ended in a 4-3 defeat against Southampton.
