When Pep Guardiola met young fan Braydon

Leicester City won the Community Shield on Sunday by defeating Manchester City at Wembley Stadium thanks to a late penalty from Kelechi Iheanacho.

The former Man City striker was fouled in the box after catching defender Nathan Ake on the ball, then stepped up to the spot to blast a finish past Zack Steffen – who got a hand on the effort.

Leicester seemed to be an afterthought heading in the pre-season fixture, which felt like it was more about Man City’s British-record signing Jack Grealish and a potential debut for the midfielder.

The England international joined Pep Guardiola’s team from Aston Villa for £100million this week and came off the bench at Wembley for his first appearance in sky blue.

Despite some impressive contributions, Grealish was unable to inspire Man City to break the deadlock, and it was Iheanacho who proved the match-winner with his late penalty heroics.

Many fans question the significance of the Community Shield, but it clearly meant a great deal to the Leicester City fans at Wembley, who roared upon hearing the final whistle. This trophy follows the FA Cup win by Brendan Rodgers’ side in May, secured with a victory over Chelsea at the same stadium. Relive the action below.

Leicester 0 - 0 Man City

9 mins: Manchester City are starting to show off their impressive footballing talents. Riyad Mahrez gives the ball to Joao Cancelo who floats a lovely ball into the box. Ferran Torres comes across Daniel Amartey and chests the ball down to Gundogan. Gundogan has the chance to shoot if he can control the ball but his first touch is a poor one and the ball rolls away towards Schmeichel.

Leicester 0 - 0 Man City

6 mins: Sam Edozie wins a free kick about 25-yards out from goal for Man City. Gundogan and Mahrez both stand over the ball and it’s the German who takes it. He whips the shot around the wall and finds the target. Kasper Schmeichel skips to his right before diving across and palming the ball over the goal. Good save!

Leicester 0 - 0 Man City

3 mins: Ilkay Gundogan clatters into James Maddison as the ball is fed up to the Leicester playmaker. Maddison goes down theatrically and the Foxes are awarded a free kick.

The free kick is sent out to Harvey Barnes on the left before they switch the play to the right. Caglar Soyuncu controls the ball before slotting it into the box for Wilfred Ndidi. He attempts to cut it back into the middle but can’t find a teammate and City clear the danger.

Mahrez faces his old club

Riyad Mahrez has played against Leicester City six times since leaving the Foxes for Manchester City in 2018, with the Algerian registering two goals and two assists in five starts against his former club over this period.

Man City have lost just two of their last 12 games at Wembley with eight wins and two draws. Both those defeats have come in consecutive FA Cup semi-final appearances in 2020 vs Arsenal, and 2021 vs Chelsea.

Vardy’s Wembley record

Jamie Vardy has scored half of Leicester’s eight goals at the ‘new’ Wembley Stadium. However, he’s been on the losing side in all three games in which he’s found the net at Wembley for the Foxes.

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers is set to be the first British manager to take charge of a side in the Community Shield since David Moyes’ Manchester United beat Wigan 2-0 in 2013.

Guardiola speaks to ITV

Man City boss Pep Guardiola spoke to ITV before kick and there’s no surprises for guessing who was the main topic of conversation.

“We will see if Jack Grealish plays today.” said Guardiola, “Jack is the perfect age and hopefully he can help us for the next five, six years.

“We have a lot of players coming back late. Next few days, some of these come back. Some players are isolated.”

Community Shield success for Man City

Man City have won the Community Shield in three of their last four appearances in the match, as many as they had in their previous eight, won three, lost five.

Excluding 2019 (when Manchester City appeared as double winners), the FA Cup winners have won the Community Shield in five of the last six campaigns, with the exception being Man City’s 2-0 win over Chelsea in 2018.
