When Pep Guardiola met young fan Braydon

Leicester City won the Community Shield on Sunday by defeating Manchester City at Wembley Stadium thanks to a late penalty from Kelechi Iheanacho.

The former Man City striker was fouled in the box after catching defender Nathan Ake on the ball, then stepped up to the spot to blast a finish past Zack Steffen – who got a hand on the effort.

Leicester seemed to be an afterthought heading in the pre-season fixture, which felt like it was more about Man City’s British-record signing Jack Grealish and a potential debut for the midfielder.

The England international joined Pep Guardiola’s team from Aston Villa for £100million this week and came off the bench at Wembley for his first appearance in sky blue.

Despite some impressive contributions, Grealish was unable to inspire Man City to break the deadlock, and it was Iheanacho who proved the match-winner with his late penalty heroics.

Many fans question the significance of the Community Shield, but it clearly meant a great deal to the Leicester City fans at Wembley, who roared upon hearing the final whistle. This trophy follows the FA Cup win by Brendan Rodgers’ side in May, secured with a victory over Chelsea at the same stadium. Relive the action below.

Wembley joy for Leicester

Leicester have won their last two matches played at Wembley Stadium, just one fewer than they’d managed in their first 14 games at the venue, won three, drew one and lost 10.

It is their third appearance in the Community Shield, after they beat Liverpool 1-0 in 1971 and lost 2-1 against Manchester United in 2016.

Rodgers forced in makeshift defence

Leicester have quite a few injuries when in comes to their defensive players. Jonny Evans, James Justin and Timothy Castagne are all out and Wesley Fofana may miss the entire season after fracturing his fibula in a pre-season friendly against Villarreal earlier this week. .

Rodgers said: "We are definitely light in the central defensive area. It is something we will have to look at for sure.

"There are people who are identified. We have a small list of players to look at so we will see."

As it stands Caglar Soyuncu is joined by Daniel Amartey for today’s Community Shield fixture with Ricardo on the right and new signing Ryan Bertrand making his debut on the left.

Kick off for this one is 45 minutes away and it’s worth noting that there’s no extra time in the Community Shield.

If the score is level after 90 minutes, it’ll go straight to penalties.

Three of the last four Community Shield matches have gone to pens, including in 2019 when Manchester City overcame Liverpool 5-4 in a shootout after a 1-1 draw.

Head-to-head

This will be just the second meeting between Leicester and Manchester City at Wembley, with City winning the 1969 FA Cup final 1-0 in the other.

Leicester have won just two of their 20 meetings with Man City outside of league competition, with seven draws and 11 defeats, winning 3-0 in January 1920 and 4-3 in February 1968 (both FA Cup).

Manchester City will not pursue Lionel Messi despite the Barcelona legend’s shock exit from the Camp Nou, Pep Guardiola has insisted.

Messi’s contract expired earlier this summer and Barcelona confirmed on Thursday evening that, despite reaching an agreement with the 34-year-old, financial constraints placed upon the club by La Liga would prevent any renewal.

Rodgers ready for ‘fantastic’ game

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers says that the Community Shield is "a fantastic game for us" and that he was "glad we are there".

The Foxes defeated Chelsea 1-0 in the 2021 FA Cup final back in May to win the competition for the first time in their history.

Rodgers then added: "We won the FA Cup and against a very good side. It will be a wonderful occasion. Wembley, full house and a chance to get hold of something at the end of it. Manchester City are a fantastic team."

Pep Guardiola wants to give Jack Grealish minutes in this Saturday’s Community Shield against Leicester City, bringing a first bit of spark to a new season.

It is not just that the new Manchester City signing is one of the most entertaining players in England, now playing in the country’s best team.

There’s also the intrigue that comes from the very individualism that makes him so entertaining, and how that will fit in to Guardiola’s highly structured approach.
