Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Four days on from a strong display in a 0-0 draw against World champions Germany, a Brazil side boasting the likes of Neymar, Philippe Coutinho and Gabriel Jesus failed to break down a resolute England defence.

Fernandinho came closest to settling the contest as the Brazil substitute hit the post in the second-half as Gareth Southgate again opted for an experimental side as he continues his plans for the World Cup.

What have they been saying?

Gareth Southgate on Marcus Rashford: “It's amazing really that he's been a player who's been able to dip under the radar as we think so much of him, not only his ability, but his mentality and his maturity.

“He's a very exciting player, but grounded, wants to improve all the time. For me he's going to be a top player. He has all the attributes of the top players I've worked with, but he's still only 20.

“Quite often we look across at each other in training and raise our eyebrows at some of the things he does. He's a very exciting player."

“Jose (Mourinho) wouldn't mess around, but he picks him in all the big games and is on the field in nearly every game.

“We wanted to look after him last summer as we see him as a big part of our future. He'll score goals... his technique and his finishing ability are tremendous.”

Dani Alves on his team-mate Gabriel Jesus: “I wasn't joking when I called him the new Ronaldo.

“He's already great and will get better. For all that he's done, all that he's achieved, there's no pressure.

“He's doing what he loves.”

Predicted line-ups

England XI: Hart; Maguire, Stones, Cahill; Walker, Livermore, Dier, Loftus-Cheek, Bertrand; Rashford, Vardy

Brazil XI: Alisson; Alves, Marquinhos, Miranda, Marcelo; Casemiro; Coutinho, Paulinho, Augusto, Neymar; Jesus

What are the odds?

England to win: 4/1
Brazil to win: 3/4
Draw: 13/5

33' - Close! Ryan Bertrand finds Jamie Vardy at the far post with a great cross and the Leicester striker picks out Marcus Rashford with his knockdown. However, Rashford has his back to goal when he receives the ball and can't quite find the space to turn and get a shot away.

34' - Ruben Loftus-Cheek, the star of Friday night,  has been forced off with an injury. Jesse Lingard is on in his place.

41' - England are growing into the game a little here. The high intensity with which Brazil started the match has dropped slightly and the hosts look capable of posing an attacking threat of their own.

45' - Just a couple of additional minutes to come at the end of an uneventful opening period.

Half-time - England 0-0 Brazil

Not too much to shout about in that opening period. Brazil had far more of the ball but their attacking threat diminished slightly as the half went on. Gareth Southgate will probably be the more satisfied of the two managers at the break.

46' - We are back underway at Wembley!

47' - Big save! Brazil get in behind England's defence for the first time and, unsurprisingly, it is Neymar who unlocks the door. The PSG man threads a pass through to Philippe Coutinho in the England penalty area but Joe Hart stays big to deny the Liverpool attacker.

50' - Brazil have flown out of the traps at the start of this second half. They're looking really threatening and England, like at the start of the opening period, are struggling to retain possession.
