Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. From five to two, the Premier League participation was whittled down in the last 16, and will be halved again come semi-final time, as Liverpool and Manchester City come to a head.
Pep Guardiola’s juggernaut are the favourites for this year’s crown given their dominance but, much like how PSG wanted to avoid Real, City will have wanted to avoid Liverpool, the team whose strengths marry up to their weaknesses perfectly.
Guardiola branded the triumvirate of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino “almost unstoppable” but will hope the “almost” part of that assertion is more true than the “unstoppable” bit given that the weakest part of City’s game – if it can be called that – is their defence. Both sides seem to have their Premier League positions sewn up so expect a European classic, but don’t call a Liverpool victory a shock – this one really could go either way.

55' - City are cranking up the pressure now and an away goal now would put them right back in the tie.
Of course, they'd have to have a shot on target first but it doesn't feel like one of those is too far away given how well they've played at the start of this second half.
57' - Raheem Sterling replaces Ilkay Gundogan for City.
Plenty of boos and chants of "one greedy b******" for Sterling from the Anfield faithful, as you might expect.
Gerard Pique has just moved Barcelona one step closer to the last four.
63' - Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren comes up with a great interception to block Leroy Sane's attempted cut-back to David Silva.
Silva would have had a free shot on goal from just 12 yards out had that pass made it's way through.
City have dominated this second period which makes you wonder if Liverpool are tiring slightly due to their first-half exerts.
68' - Nicolas Otamendi rises highest to meet David Silva's corner but the Argentine's header loops well over Loris Karius' crossbar.
72' - Chance for Liverpool!
Substitute Dominic Solanke gets down the right wing before delivering a cross into Sadio Mane, whose header at goal is poor and allows Ederson to come out and collect the ball.
Edin Dzeko has just given Roma a lifeline at the Nou Camp.
Barcelona lead 3-1.
