Liverpool vs Manchester City, Champions League - as it happened
Re-live all the action from a memorable night at Anfield
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. From five to two, the Premier League participation was whittled down in the last 16, and will be halved again come semi-final time, as Liverpool and Manchester City come to a head.
Pep Guardiola’s juggernaut are the favourites for this year’s crown given their dominance but, much like how PSG wanted to avoid Real, City will have wanted to avoid Liverpool, the team whose strengths marry up to their weaknesses perfectly.
Guardiola branded the triumvirate of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino “almost unstoppable” but will hope the “almost” part of that assertion is more true than the “unstoppable” bit given that the weakest part of City’s game – if it can be called that – is their defence. Both sides seem to have their Premier League positions sewn up so expect a European classic, but don’t call a Liverpool victory a shock – this one really could go either way.

40' - Roberto Firmino skips past Vincent Kompany just outside the area before drilling a left-footed shot at goal. However, the ball flies a good few feet over the rooted Ederson's crossbar.
In case my description of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's thronker didn't quite do it justice:
45' - Two minutes of added time to come at the end of this first half.
City are finishing the half strongly but they're still yet to test Loris Karius.
45+3' - Nicolas Otamendi goes into the book for a mistimed challenge on Roberto Firmino.
Half-time - Liverpool 3-0 Manchester City
Virgil van Dijk comes agonisingly close to making it 4-0 in the third minute of injury time but his header from Mo Salah's free-kick glances just wide of Ederson's far post.
Still, I think it's fair to say that Jurgen Klopp would've taken a 3-0 half-time lead if you'd offered it him before the match.
Goals: Mo Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sadio Mane
49' - City are enjoying a decent spell of possession here but they're still yet to have a single shot on target.
Who'd have predicted that before the match? Well, not me, the guy who had a cheeky wager on a City win.
Money down the drain.
Elsewhere in Europe
Barcelona led Roma 1-0 at half-time thanks to a Daniele De Rossi own-goal and they Blaugrana have now doubled their lead just before the hour mark... thanks to another own-goal, this time from Kostas Manolas.
52' - Chance!
Fernandinho finds Leroy Sane in the box with a wonderful pass but the German sends his first-time shot well wide of the far post from a tight angle.
