Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

From five to two, the Premier League participation was whittled down in the last 16, and will be halved again come semi-final time, as Liverpool and Manchester City come to a head.

Pep Guardiola’s juggernaut are the favourites for this year’s crown given their dominance but, much like how PSG wanted to avoid Real, City will have wanted to avoid Liverpool, the team whose strengths marry up to their weaknesses perfectly.

Guardiola branded the triumvirate of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino “almost unstoppable” but will hope the “almost” part of that assertion is more true than the “unstoppable” bit given that the weakest part of City’s game – if it can be called that – is their defence. Both sides seem to have their Premier League positions sewn up so expect a European classic, but don’t call a Liverpool victory a shock – this one really could go either way.

Remember how I was telling you that Edin Dzeko had given Roma hope at the Nou Camp?

Well, Luis Suarez has just cruelly ended that hope.

The Uruguayan has just restored Barcelona's three-goal advantage and they now lead 4-1.

84' - Chance for City!

Kevin De Bruyne finds the unmarked David Silva in the box but the Spaniard, perhaps not expecting the ball to make it all the way through to him, miscontrols the ball with just the goalkeeper to beat.

That's a head-in-hands moment for the little magician.

85' - Alberto Moreno replaces Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for Liverpool.

86' - Jordan Henderson goes into the book for a foolish challenge on Raheem Sterling.

That booking rules the skipper out of next week's second leg.

90' - Three minutes of added time to come.

90+2' - Raheem Sterling goes into the book for a late challenge on Gini Wijnaldum.

Looks like this game's up for City. A mountain to climb in next week's second leg at the Etihad.

Post-match reaction from Liverpool's players

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

On the manner of Liverpool's win: "It was a great start. Going 3-0 up before half-time set us up brilliantly. We knew we had to start fast and it wasn't difficult with the crowd tonight."

On his stunning goal: "It was a good strike. I've been working on that and I've showed myself that it's on more often and that I can keep doing it."

Jordan Henderson

On the manner of Liverpool's win: "We needed to make the most of the brilliant atmosphere. We did that from the start. It was a good first half from us. Second half they came at us and we dropped a bit deep at times but we defended really well.

"Our game is about working as a team and I think we did that brilliantly today."

On the booking he picked up that rules him out of next week's second leg: "I felt as though I could get the ball. I'm a bit disappointed because I didn't make many fouls in the game."
