Chelsea vs Villarreal LIVE: Uefa Super Cup result, final score and reaction after penalty shootout
Relive all the action as last season’s Champions League and Europa League winners met in Belfast
Kepa Arrizabalaga came off the bench to save two penalties and earn Chelsea Super League success in a shoot-out victory over Villarreal.
Thomas Tuchel made the call to replace Edouard Mendy in the closing stages of the 1-1 draw - with Kepa then providing the heroics.
Kai Havertz missed the first spot-kick but after that Chelsea were perfect while both Aissa Mandi and Raul Albiol both saw their penalties saved as Chelsea won the shoot-out 6-5.
Hakim Ziyech shone from the start and opened the scoring only to injure his shoulder before half-time to give Thomas Tuchel a worry ahead of the Premier League opener against Crystal Palace on Saturday. Relive all the action live below:
Chelsea 1 - 0 Villarreal
54 mins: Chelsea are floundering here. The ball comes back to Chalobah who’s put under pressure in his own box. He tries to shift it around Pedraza but the left back wins the ball and fires it low into the six-yard box. The Villarreal strikers can’t get to it though as Mendy flings himself at the ball and smothers it.
OFF THE POST! Moreno almost has the equaliser!
51 mins: Edouard Mendy almost sends his team down the creek without a paddle. He gives the ball away to Dia with a poor kick and leaves his two centre-backs scrambling. Dia slides the ball into the box for Gerard Moreno who collects it and guides a side-footed shot around the Chelsea goalkeeper. The shot looks to be sneaking into the far bottom corner but hits the post and bounces away!
Chelsea 1 - 0 Villarreal
48 mins: Kante blocks a pass into the box and gives Villarreal an early corner in this half. Alberto Moreno whips the set piece into the middle but can’t beat Kai Havertz on the near post.
Chelsea then sweep up the pitch and utilise the space on the left again. Havertz takes the ball to the edge of the box and shoots. He connects well and sends his effort into the side netting.
Chelsea 1 - 0 Villarreal
Second half: No changes from either team at half-time. Villarreal get the match back underway. Alberto Moreno struck the crossbar in the last minute of the first half, can they Spanish side build on that momentum?
Ecstasy to agony for Hakim Ziyech.
Half-time: Chelsea 1 - 0 Villarreal
45+3 mins: Alberto Moreno hits the crossbar! A nice period of possession almost pays off for Villarreal at the end of the first half as Gerard Moreno chips a cross to the back post. Alberto meets it on the volley and smacks his effort into the uderside of the crossbar. The ball bounces on the wrong side of the goalline and Chelsea clear.
That means the Blues have a one-goal advantage as the players head into the break. Thomas Tuchel’s men have been the better of the two sides. They’ve dominated possession and worked the wide areas to good success. Villarreal started to come alive in the closing minutes and Unai Emery will want them to keep that momentum through the second half.
Chelsea 1 - 0 Villarreal
45 mins: Trigueros sends the resultant free kick into the box but doesn’t beat the first man, Kovacic, who heads it clear for Chelsea. Three minutes of added time to play.
Chelsea 1 - 0 Villarreal
43 mins: That’s got to hurt. Antonio Rudiger takes no prisoners as he clears his lines. Yeremi Pino gets in behind Alonso and races Rudiger to the loose ball. Rudiger gets there first with a lunge. He clears the danger and follows through, cleaning out Pino and getting a yellow card for his efforts.
Chelsea 1 - 0 Villarreal
42 mins: This is such a freak injury. Ziyech cradles his arm as he’s helped off the pitch. It was an innocuous challenge and something has just gone. In his place comes Christian Pulisic, he slots into the space on the left side with Havertz moved over to the right to fill in for Ziyech.
Chelsea 1 - 0 Villarreal
39 mins: Ziyech is down for Chelsea with what looks like a shoulder injury. He challenged Juan Foyth for an aerial ball and went straight to ground clutching his right shoulder. The game has stopped whilst he receives treatment and Thomas Tuchel is taking no chances. Ziyech is going to come off.
