Kepa Arrizabalaga came off the bench to save two penalties and earn Chelsea Super League success in a shoot-out victory over Villarreal.
Thomas Tuchel made the call to replace Edouard Mendy in the closing stages of the 1-1 draw - with Kepa then providing the heroics.
Kai Havertz missed the first spot-kick but after that Chelsea were perfect while both Aissa Mandi and Raul Albiol both saw their penalties saved as Chelsea won the shoot-out 6-5.
Hakim Ziyech shone from the start and opened the scoring only to injure his shoulder before half-time to give Thomas Tuchel a worry ahead of the Premier League opener against Crystal Palace on Saturday. Relive all the action live below:

36 mins: Manu Trigueros makes a decent run into the right side of Chelsea’s box as Alfonso Pedraza swings a diagonal ball over to him. Alonso is forced back to defend and gets lucky as the ball drops over the head of Trigueros and he’s able to boot it clear.

33 mins: Alonso is making himself a nuisance. He passes the ball to Werner and continues to run into the box. Werner turns on the ball and knocks it out to Ziyech wide on the left. Ziyech pulls the ball back to Alonso who tries to guide it into the near bottom corner only to be denied by a diving Asenjo.
CHANCE! Mendy denies Dia!
30 mins: Boulaye Dia has a good chance to level things for Villarreal as he breaks through the Chelsea lines and receives the ball in the box. Mendy is off his line in a flash and he charges down the shot as Dia shoots on the turn. Good save.

27 mins: Hakim Ziyech puts Chelsea in front! It’s justly deserved, they’ve been the better team by a mile. Chelsea win the ball back in midfield and send it quickly out to Alonso on the left. He feeds it up to Havertz who has tons of space to run into before squaring the ball into the middle of the box. Werner overruns the pass but it comes to Ziyech who calmly slots the into the bottom corner.

24 mins: Kovacic swings a diagonal ball across to the right wing where Callum Hudson-Odoi brings the ball down. He takes it into the box but slips and has to pass the ball backwards, ending the Chelsea attack.

21 mins: Great defending from Raul Albiol. Alonso slots Werner into the left side of the box and the Chelsea winger drives the ball into the area. He’s quicker than Albiol but the Villarreal sticks with his man and forces Werner to run the ball out of play.

18 mins: Chelsea win a free kick over on the right wing but deep in Villarreal’s half. This is a good opportunity to whip the ball into the box for the Blues. Ziyech swings in the set piece but Gerard Moreno gets up first and heads it away. Mateo Kovacic collects the loose ball and sends it quickly back to Ziyech. He puts in another cross and picks out the goalkeeper.

Villarreal create their first foray forward as Alberto Moreno sends cross into the box. It’s too close to Edouard Mendy though and the Chelsea goalkeeper plucks the ball out of the air.

9 mins: Chelsea keep finding space on the left side. This time it’s Havertz who delivers a decent ball into the box. It’s cleared by Villarreal but N’Golo Kante recovers it high up the pitch. He turns towards goal, sets himself and drills one from range. The shot is on target and Asenjo has to leap to his right to tickle the shot wide of the post.

6 mins: Alonso has started well out of the left for Chelsea. He drifts wide as Antonio Rudiger brings the ball forward and slots a lovely through ball into the box. Alonso darts in from the left, gets to the pass and delivers a teasing cross into the six yard box winning a corner.
The corner is whipped in to the far post where Werner is tussling with Alberto Moreno. He wins the battle and meets the ball on the volley. His effort is sent straight at Sergio Asenjo who makes a solid one handed save.
