78 mins: Chelsea have responded. They’re pressing further forward and finding room to work the ball into the box. A pass up to Havertz from Mount is little behind the German forward and he’s beaten to the ball by Albiol who then leans into Havertz drawing the foul.

75 mins: You have to say it’s no more than Villarreal deserve. They’ve taken the game to Chelsea in the second half and now have their reward. Can they now go on to claim a winner or will Chelsea respond?

73 mins: There’s the equaliser! It’s a mistake from Rudiger. He gives the ball away with another poor clearance from Chelsea and it comes up to Gerard Moreno. Dia darts into the box and receives the pass. He backheels it as Moreno follows the ball into the penalty area. Rudiger is left in no-man’s land as Villarreal work the ball around him. Moreno collects the ball and sends it sweetly past Mendy with a shot towards the far post.

72 mins: Alonso goes on an enterprising run as a long ball comes over the top for him. He brings it under control to the left of the penalty area but his pass into the box comes straight to Asenjo in Villarreal’s goal.

69 mins: Mario Gaspar and Moi Gomez are both on for Villarreal. Etienne Capoue and Manu Trigueros go off. This game is set up nicely for the last 20 minutes. Villarreal are in the ascendancy but Chelsea have the lead. Can the Blues hold out?

66 mins: Trevoh Chalobah has come into his own as the game has gone on. He makes a vital interception in his own six-yard box to defend a cross and then clears a rebound from a Trigueros shot.

63 mins: Time for some substitutes. Thomas Tuchel makes a triple change bringing on Andreas Christensen, Jorginho and Mason Mount. Kante, Werner and Zouma are the men replaced.

60 mins: Alberto Moreno arrives late for a tackle on Pulisic and sticks out a leg to bring the Chelsea winger down. Alonso dinks the set piece into the box where Kurt Zouma climbs over Albiol to win the header. He puts his effort wide of the near post but is punished for a foul on the Villarreal captain.

57 mins: Unai Emery makes his first change of the night as Pervis Estupinan comes on for Alfonso Pedraza. Villarreal have firmly found their mojo in this half. They’re causing Chelsea quite a few problems.

Estupinan is called into action early as he makes a run down the left wing. He rolls the ball towards the Chelsea box but is hit but a strong tackle from Chalobah. The Villarreal fans shout their outrage but the referee plays on.
