God Save the King sung at England cricket Test match

England polished off the remaining runs they needed to beat South Africa by nine wickets in the third Test at the Oval on Monday morning to secure a 2-1 series victory.

Openers Zak Crawley and Alex Lees were still at the crease as the hosts began the day requiring just 33 runs for victory after bad light stopped play on Sunday evening.

Lees was dropped by Proteas wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne from the third ball of the morning and then survived another scare when a thick edge flew over Keegan Petersen at third slip to go for four but the Proteas made a breakthrough on the penultimate delivery of the third over of the day, with Lees’ fortune finally running out as a review showed he had been trapped lbw by Kagiso Rabada.

The Durham batter was out for 39 with England 22 runs from clinching the series but Ollie Pope joined Crawley at the crease to quickly knock them off, as the under-fire opener eased the pressure on himself somewhat by ending unbeaten on 69 and cap a remarkable summer for England’s Test team.

Follow reaction to the third Test below:

South Africa 36-5 (11.3), Zondo 6, Mulder 3, Robinson 3-14 (5.3)

Robinson to continue for England. He continues to probe just outside the off-stump but Wiaan Mulder is disciplined enough the let the ball go by.

There’s a bit of movement off the pitch which is making it really tricky for the batters but England have been top quality this morning.

South Africa 36-5 (11), Zondo 6, Mulder 3, Broad 1-9 (2)

Three runs off Stuart Broad’s second over with Wiaan Mulder getting off the mark with a nice square drive for two. He takes a single off the last ball to keep the strike.

One hour played and that’ll be drinks.

South Africa 32-5 (10), Zondo 5, Mulder 0, Robinson 3-14 (5)

Wiaan Mulder is the latest South African batter to make it to the crease and he gets through the rest of Ollie Robinson’s over.

Robinson has been exceptional this morning. He bowled brilliantly with the new ball at Old Trafford but didn’t get his rewards there, he’s certainly getting them here at The Oval.

Wicket! Verreynne 0 (2) c. Foakes b. Robinson, South Africa 32-5 (9.3)

Incredible from Robinson who picks up his third of the morning! It’s a different challenge to the right-handed Kyle Verreynne but Robinson manages to get the ball to hold its line and it finds the slightest edge from the South African wicketkeeper leaving Ben Foakes with another simple catch behind the wicket.

South Africa 32-4 (9.1), Zondo 5, Verreynne 0, Robinson 2-15 (4.1)

Kyle Verreynne is the new man in but Khaya Zondo is on strike to Ollie Robinson. Ben Stokes has put in a short leg which is Ollie Pope and Zondo almost picks him out when flicking one off his hips.

The umpire signals for a leg bye so he wouldn’t have been out but the change in field looks like a good one for England.

Wicket! Rickelton 11 (20) c. Foakes b. Broad, South Africa 31-4 (9)

Broad gets his first wicket! The last ball of the over is a little fuller, still angling across Rickelton who pushes forward and nicks it through to Ben Foakes.

Brilliant bowling from England who’ve picked up four wickets in the first hour of play.

South Africa 31-3 (8.5), Zondo 5, Rickelton 11, Broad 0-5 (0.5)

Zondo flicks the ball off his hip to square-leg and takes a single leaving Rickelton two deliveries from Broad’s first over.

Broad stays over the wicket, digs the delivery in short and wide and Rickelton latches onto it with a cut past gully for four runs!

Michael Jones10 September 2022 11:46

South Africa 26-3 (8.1), Zondo 4, Rickelton 7, Broad 0-0 (0.1)

An early change in bowling from Ben Stokes as he chucks the ball to Stuart Broad. Broad is sporting his now signature white headband and is right on the money first up to Khaya Zondo.

Michael Jones10 September 2022 11:44

South Africa 26-3 (8), Zondo 4, Rickelton 7, Robinson 2-14 (4)

It’s a tight but teasing line from Ollie Robinson who’s over the wicket and angling the ball away from Ryan Rickelton. He gets one to come back into the batter and hits Rickelton on the pads but an inside edge halts England’s appeal.

Rickelton plays inside the ball as Robinson pulls his length back just a touch and beats the outside edge. He looks to the sky is disbelief.

England are bowling well here.
