God Save the King sung at England cricket Test match

England polished off the remaining runs they needed to beat South Africa by nine wickets in the third Test at the Oval on Monday morning to secure a 2-1 series victory.

Openers Zak Crawley and Alex Lees were still at the crease as the hosts began the day requiring just 33 runs for victory after bad light stopped play on Sunday evening.

Lees was dropped by Proteas wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne from the third ball of the morning and then survived another scare when a thick edge flew over Keegan Petersen at third slip to go for four but the Proteas made a breakthrough on the penultimate delivery of the third over of the day, with Lees’ fortune finally running out as a review showed he had been trapped lbw by Kagiso Rabada.

The Durham batter was out for 39 with England 22 runs from clinching the series but Ollie Pope joined Crawley at the crease to quickly knock them off, as the under-fire opener eased the pressure on himself somewhat by ending unbeaten on 69 and cap a remarkable summer for England’s Test team.

Follow reaction to the third Test below:

South Africa 26-3 (7), Zondo 4, Rickelton 7, Anderson 1-12 (4)

Zondo is trying to be busy at the crease. He almost causes a run out by calling Rickelton through for one off the first ball of Anderson’s fourth over before working the ball away for two when he gets back on strike.

It looks frenetic from the new batter but that’ll just be nervous energy running through his body.

South Africa 22-3 (6), Zondo 1, Rickelton 6, Robinson 2-14 (3)

Ben Stokes wants to attack the new batter, Khaya Zondo, and puts five slips in for his first ball. Robinson finds the edge but it bounces short of Zak Crawley!

England are well on top here but Zondo gets off the mark with the final delivery of the over and scrambles through for a single.

Wicket! Petersen 12 (14 ) b. Robinson, South Africa 21-3 (5.4)

What a beauty! Ollie Robinson is honing in of the top of off-stump. The South African batters seem to be having trouble picking up his length as Keegan Petersen shoulders arm with the ball nipping back at him.

He thinks it’s heading over the top but the ball cannons into the top of the off-stump, Peterson is bowled and he has to go.

South Africa 21-2 (5.3), Petersen 12, Rickelton 6, Robinson 1-13 (2.3)

Lovely! Robinson gets his line slightly wrong and gifts Petersen enough room to open up his arms and drive the ball sweetly through cover point for four runs!

South Africa 17-2 (5), Petersen 8, Rickelton 6, Anderson 1-8 (3)

Here’s how Dean Elgar was dismissed. That’s an emphatic dismissal for the South African captain.

South Africa 17-2 (5), Petersen 8, Rickelton 6, Anderson 1-8 (3)

Despite the two early wickets for England, Peteresen and Rickelton are scoring freely. They’re making use of the gap between point and cover to take singles and rotate the strike.

The England slips are interested as Anderson nips the ball away from Rickelton’s outside edge but the batter shrugs off the loose shot.

Five overs bowled.

South Africa 15-2 (4), Petersen 7, Rickelton 5, Robinson 1-9 (2)

Ollie Robinson continues his probing length but Keegan Petersen manages to get on top of the bounce and stab the ball away through backward point for three runs.

The left-handed Rickelton shuffles over to his own off-stump as Robinson comes round the wicket and pushes the ball into the offside to take one run and end the over.

South Africa 11-2 (3), Petersen 4, Rickelton 4, Anderson 1-6 (2)

Ryan Rickelton is the new batter. He didn’t play in the first two test matches and has been brought in the strengthen South Africa’s batting line-up.

It may be a good call as he gets off the mark with a luscious drive through the covers for four!

Wicket! Erwee 0 (4) c. Foakes, b. Anderson, South Africa 7-2 (2.2)

Another one! James Anderson gets his first wicket of the match. He comes over the wicket and angles the ball across Sarel Erwee just back of a length.

The South African opener hangs the bat out to cover any in-swing but the ball holds its line and takes the edge through to Ben Foakes who makes no mistakes behind the stumps.

South Africa 7-1 (2.1), Petersen 4, Erwee 0, Anderson 0-2 (1.1)

Petersen strides forward and blocks Jimmy Anderson into the gap at cover to pinch another single and get off strike.
