God Save the King sung at England cricket Test match

England polished off the remaining runs they needed to beat South Africa by nine wickets in the third Test at the Oval on Monday morning to secure a 2-1 series victory.

Openers Zak Crawley and Alex Lees were still at the crease as the hosts began the day requiring just 33 runs for victory after bad light stopped play on Sunday evening.

Lees was dropped by Proteas wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne from the third ball of the morning and then survived another scare when a thick edge flew over Keegan Petersen at third slip to go for four but the Proteas made a breakthrough on the penultimate delivery of the third over of the day, with Lees’ fortune finally running out as a review showed he had been trapped lbw by Kagiso Rabada.

The Durham batter was out for 39 with England 22 runs from clinching the series but Ollie Pope joined Crawley at the crease to quickly knock them off, as the under-fire opener eased the pressure on himself somewhat by ending unbeaten on 69 and cap a remarkable summer for England’s Test team.

Follow reaction to the third Test below:

South Africa 48-6 (15.2), Zondo 7, Jansen 10, Robinson 4-17 (7.2)

Ollie Robinson bangs a short ball into the turf and troubles Marco Jansen who awkwardly sneaks underneath it. Ben Foakes takes another nice catch behind the wicket and there’s a half appeal from England for a caught behind.

Not out says the umpire.

South Africa 48-6 (15), Zondo 7, Jansen 10, Broad 1-17 (4)

Jansen wins the battle with Broad with another nice push off his legs through midwicket. He picks up three this time as Jack Leach comes round along the boundary rope.

England lose another review as Broad strikes Zondo on the lower part of the thigh pad and fancies it for LBW. Stokes sends it upstairs but ball tracking says it’s bouncing over the top.

England just have one review left.

South Africa 45-6 (14.4), Zondo 7, Jansen 7, Broad 1-14 (3.4)

Better from Stuart Broad. He’s slightly fuller and draws a false shot out of Jansen who misses out on a big drive through cover.

The South African all-rounder whips the ball through midwicket next up though and earns himself a boundary before Broad nips another one past the outside edge.

This is a good contest.

South Africa 41-6 (14), Zondo 7, Jansen 3, Robinson 4-17 (7)

How many more overs will Ben Stokes give Ollie Robinson? Maybe one more for an eight over spell or will he says ‘bowl until you’re goosed mate’?

James Anderson doesn’t look as though he’ll be coming on anytime soon.

South Africa 41-6 (13.3), Zondo 7, Jansen 3, Robinson 4-17 (6.3)

Jansen is off the mark. He pushes the ball straight back past Robinson to collect two runs before doing the same again with less power and taking a single to Jack Leach at mid-on.

Robinson’s speeds are still up there, he’s in a purple patch right now and looks determined to complete his five-for.

South Africa 37-6 (13), Zondo 7, Jansen 0, Broad 1-10 (3)

You have to say it’s a perfect morning for bowling in England. There’s plenty of cloud cover, the ball is moving around, the bowlers are fit and the series is on the line.

Ben Stokes’ decision to bowl first two days ago has paid off handsomely.

Michael Jones10 September 2022 12:16

South Africa 37-6 (12.3), Zondo 7, Jansen 0, Broad 1-10 (2.3)

Review! Broad gets one to cut back into Jansen and the ball flies over middle stump before Foakes leaps to his left and clings onto the ball.

There’s a noise as the ball goes through with England very excited, they think Jansen’s got an inside edge on the ball. The umpire says not out and Ben Stokes immediately reviews.

Not out. The replays show a clear gap between bat and ball and there’s no spike on ultra-edge. Jansen survives.

Michael Jones10 September 2022 12:14

South Africa 37-6 (12.2), Zondo 7, Jansen 0, Broad 1-10 (2.2)

Stuart Broad is almost through three overs and he hasn’t found much rhythm. There has been the occasional magic delivery - like the one to dismiss Ryan Rickelton - but he hasn’t honed in on his line yet.

Michael Jones10 September 2022 12:12

South Africa 36-6 (12), Zondo 6, Jansen 0, Robinson 4-14 (6)

Marco Jansen plays and misses his first delivery from Ollie Robinson. It’s a wicket maiden for England’s opening bowler. South Africa are crumbling at The Oval.

Michael Jones10 September 2022 12:09

Wicket! Mulder 3 (13) c. Foakes b. Robinson, South Africa 36-6 (11.5)

So much for discipline.

Robinson pushes the ball a little fuller and wider. There’s a hint of away swing and Wiaan Mulder’s eyes light up and he goes for a booming drive.

The ball takes the edge, Mulder has to go and Robinson picks up his fourth wicket of the day!
