England put their opening-day defeat against New Zealand firmly behind them when they beat Bangladesh by 137 runs in the Cricket World Cup in Dharamshala.
The defending champions were utterly humbled by the Kiwis in a nine-wicket defeat that left viewers stunned, and even more problematically, dealt a significant blow to the side’s net run rate.
The Himalayan foothills provided a stunning backdrop to the occasion, and despite pre-match discussions being dominated by concerns around the nature of the pitch, it did not have any significant effect on the performance. Speaking to reporters on the eve of the clash, Jos Buttler described the pitch as “poor”, claiming it was different to the one used when he played at the same ground during the IPL, but England emerged victorious and having boosted their net run rate.
The pitch was also a cause for concern when Afghanistan played against Bangladesh there, as Mujeeb Ur Rahman jarred his knee in the sandy turf diving for a ball, and head coach and former England batter Jonathan Trott said players were “unsure” over their footing.

England 238-1 (35) Root 54, Malan 128, Taskin 0-22 (4)
Root hits one that was dropped by midwicket! The chances have been few and far between, it was a full-stretched effort but just put down.
Unfortunately, he has now followed it up with two wides.
A very long over has come to an end for Taskin, Shakib has bowled very well but the rest of Bangladesh’s attack has not quite been up to the same standard.
England 232-1 (34) Root 51, Malan 127, Miraz 0-55 (6)
England are motoring along here, the only question is how many more can they get?
Root 50! England 227-1
Root has his second half-century in as many matches, brought up with a four off Shoriful.
England 217-1 (33) Root 45, Malan 122, Miraz 0-55 (6)
The 200 is up for England, and Root is nearing a milestone of his own although it feels like he’s only just come to the crease!
Malan has expertly picked the gaps and that over was no different, a slog-sweep but straight out of the middle and he will have another four.
But the next one is dragged down and he gives the ball what it deserves, it has been slapped for six.
And another one has been sent down the ground for six, back-to-back sixes, the hundred partnership comes from just 90 deliveries. England are motoring along.
Another four from the final ball of the over, 22 from that over!
England 199-1 (32) Root 44, Malan 101, Shakib 1-52 (10)
Malan scored a century and 97 against New Zealand in September and has followed it up with another big score today.
The partnership has been a run-a-ball and it’s all going smoothly for England.
Malan 100! England 195-1
Having been asked to bat first it has been an ideal start to the match, Root cuts the first ball away to bring Malan on strike.
Malan races through for a single and has his century from 91 balls!
England 192-1 (31) Root 40, Malan 99, Mahedi 0-32 (4)
Malan will not want to have a drinks break when on 99! But he has played exceptionally so far.
England 187-1 (30) Root 38, Malan 95, Shakib 1-46 (9)
A good over from Bangladesh, just the three from it. But it is looking more and more like an excellent batting track, that might only improve as the day heats up and the snow higher up in the Himalayan foothills starts to melt.
England 184-1, Root 37, Malan 93, Mahedi 0-26 (3)
Root has cut away for another boundary, the fielder on the boundary did dive, but could not stop the ball.
England 177-1 (28) Root 36, Malan 87, Hasan 1-43 (8)
Root fires one to the boundary and he is starting to open up here, and just reminding everyone what an exceptional player he is.
There was a lot of debate ahead of the tournament about his form, he didn’t perform as he would have liked against New Zealand and a final chance for match practice against Ireland was rained off, but on the biggest stage he has done well.
A 77 in the first game and he is on course for something similar again today
