England put their opening-day defeat against New Zealand firmly behind them when they beat Bangladesh by 137 runs in the Cricket World Cup in Dharamshala.
The defending champions were utterly humbled by the Kiwis in a nine-wicket defeat that left viewers stunned, and even more problematically, dealt a significant blow to the side’s net run rate.
The Himalayan foothills provided a stunning backdrop to the occasion, and despite pre-match discussions being dominated by concerns around the nature of the pitch, it did not have any significant effect on the performance. Speaking to reporters on the eve of the clash, Jos Buttler described the pitch as “poor”, claiming it was different to the one used when he played at the same ground during the IPL, but England emerged victorious and having boosted their net run rate.
The pitch was also a cause for concern when Afghanistan played against Bangladesh there, as Mujeeb Ur Rahman jarred his knee in the sandy turf diving for a ball, and head coach and former England batter Jonathan Trott said players were “unsure” over their footing.

Bangladesh 221-9 (46) Taskin 13, Mustafizur 0, Wood 1-27 (9) need 144 runs from 24
Just one left for England now, there is no chance of Bangladesh victory and Buttler’s side are closing in on one here
Wicket! Shoriful out for 12 bowled Wood - Bangladesh 221-9
Mark Wood returns, he has bowled quickly today, but does not yet have a wicket.
But he has one now, the change of angle and a quick straight delivery is enough for Shoriful! 91mph and crashed into the stumps.
Bangladesh 220-8 (45) Taskin 12, Shoriful 8, Curran 0-40 (6) need 145 run from 30
Curran is back into the attack to try and wrap this up, but he starts his sixth over with a wide.
Shoriful drives for four, Rashid gives chase but can’t stop it crossing the boundary...he thought about diving but maybe the issues with the turf were just in the back of his mind.
And there’s another boundary down the ground from the final ball of the over.
Bangladesh 209-8 (44) Taskin 12, Shoriful 3, Livingstone 1-13 (3) need 156 runs from 36
After just poking around for singles, Taskin has launched Livingstone for six! That has travelled well with a good connection.
Bangladesh 201-8 (43) Taskin 5, Shoriful 2, Rashid 1-42 (10)
Rashid is all bowled out and Bangladesh do bring up their 200, they have dug in here after the early wickets, the result was never really under threat but it has showed a level of determination.
Bangladesh 198-8 (42) Shoriful 2, Taskin 2, Livingstone 1-5 (2) need 167 from 48
Livingstone back on from the other end after striking with his first ball and England just need two more wickets to tie everything up here.
Wicket! Mahedi out for 14! b Rashid - Bangladesh 195-8
Spin from both ends now, and Rashid has his breakthrough!
Mahedi played for the googly and it went straight on into the stumps.
Bangladesh 191-7 (40) Taskin 1, Mahedi 10, Livingstone 1-2 (1) need 174 runs from 60
Taskin Ahmed will come in at number nine, Livingstone might have had to wait until the 40th over to have a bowl, Rashid had bowled eight already, but he has the wicket with one that just bounced up a bit more than expected.
The next two fly past the edge of the left hander, but it won’t be a wicket maiden and he is driven for a single with the fourth ball.
Wicket! Hridoy out for 39 ct Buttler b Livingstone - Bangladesh 189-7
Livingstone strikes first ball with an expert leg break! That’s just what England were looking for!
The first ball is edged behind and Hridoy is out for 39 from 61!
Bangladesh 189-6 (39) Hridoy 39, Mahedi 9, Rashid 0-35 (8) need 176 runs from 66
The googly has done the batter but Mahedi survives as it goes past the stumps.
The next one is defended strongly off the front foot.
Topley will chase another that is hit up into the air, but he wasn’t close enough to dive for the catch.
