England put their opening-day defeat against New Zealand firmly behind them when they beat Bangladesh by 137 runs in the Cricket World Cup in Dharamshala.
The defending champions were utterly humbled by the Kiwis in a nine-wicket defeat that left viewers stunned, and even more problematically, dealt a significant blow to the side’s net run rate.
The Himalayan foothills provided a stunning backdrop to the occasion, and despite pre-match discussions being dominated by concerns around the nature of the pitch, it did not have any significant effect on the performance. Speaking to reporters on the eve of the clash, Jos Buttler described the pitch as “poor”, claiming it was different to the one used when he played at the same ground during the IPL, but England emerged victorious and having boosted their net run rate.
The pitch was also a cause for concern when Afghanistan played against Bangladesh there, as Mujeeb Ur Rahman jarred his knee in the sandy turf diving for a ball, and head coach and former England batter Jonathan Trott said players were “unsure” over their footing.

Bangladesh 96-4 (18) Das 65, Mushfiqur 18, Wood 0-16 (4) need 269 runs to win
Wood and Curran have not been going for a lot of runs here, but they haven’t found the breakthroughs either.
Three from that last over from Wood.
Bangladesh 93-4 (17) Das 64, Mushfiqur 16, Curran 0-24 (4) need 272 runs to win
This pair have looked comfortable against Curran, especially guiding the ball towards third man, and are cutting comfortably.
Bangladesh 86-4 (16) Das 60, Mushfiqur 14, Wood 0-12 (3) need 278 runs to win
Wood’s first ball went for 4, the first boundary in quite a few overs, but he has reached some incredible speeds here, with all of his speeds above 149.1kph or 92.5 mph.
Bangladesh 81-4 (15) Das 59, Mushifiqur 9, Curran 0-18 (3) need 284 runs to win
It might be a case soon of how can England get these wickets as quickly as possible due to their exceptionally poor run rate from the first match against New Zealand.
Ahead of the match it stood at the worst in the tournament, and England will want to rectify that ahead of the later group stages where it could play a part in semi-final qualification.
Just having a look at England’s fixtures and they have no back to back games in any one city, every one is in a different place and that will also take its toll.
Bangladesh 74-4 (14) Das 56, Mushifiqur 6, Wood 0-6 (2) need 291 runs to win
Wood back into the attack and Bangladesh are just struggling to score a little bit.
Three runs again from the over.
Bangladesh 71-4 (13) Das 54, Mushifiqur 5, Curran 0-11 (2) need 294 runs to win
Das and Mushifiqur have just knocked the ball around for singles off Curran, in order to take the game deep these two will have to stay at the crease.
Three runs from the over, with Curran using the slower ball a few times.
Bangladesh 67-4 (12) Das 51, Mushifiqur 4, Wood 0-3 (1) need 297 runs to win
Mark Wood will be brought on to bowl his express pace, he has not bowled much since the Ashes, but he starts with a dot ball at 90mph...
Das’ half-century came from 40 deliveries and he had an explosive start with 12 in the first over.
Three runs from Wood’s first over.
Litton Das 50! Bangladesh 65-4 (11) Das 50, Mushifiqur 3, Curran 0-9 (1)
After Woakes’ breakthrough, Buttler has decided he will have a breather and hands the ball to Sam Curran.
It might be a great idea, as Bangladesh have struggled against the left-handed Topley so far already.
Das brings up his 50 with the final ball of the over and he has looked untroubled while all the wickets have tumbled, a great innings from the opening batter.
Bangladesh 55-4 (10) Das 44, Mushifiqur 1, Topley 3-12 (5) need 308 to win
Mushifiqur off the mark with a boundary but Topley has continued to bowl expertly here.
Das missed a big heave into the leg side but follows it up with a six for the last ball of the powerplay, fine leg was up and it was dispatched over his head and over the rope.
Bangladesh 49-4 (9) Das 37 Mushifiqur 0, Woakes 1-37 (5) need 316 runs to win
No runs off that over following the wicket, much tighter from Woakes.
