Intense final press conference as Canelo and Golokvin prepare to end rivalry with trilogy bout

Over the course of 12 rounds on Saturday night, “GGG” took on an unfortunate new meaning for Gennady Golovkin, as his chances of securing ‘justice’ in his trilogy with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez were rapidly going, going, and then gone at last.

Judging controversies marred the rivals’ first two encounters, in 2017 and 2018, denying Golovkin one if not two victories over Canelo, and the irony on this occasion was that the Kazakh might have finally been on the ‘right’ end of one, had he not left it too late to start firing. But leaving it late was the theme of this bout, which pitted a prime Canelo at 32 against an aged Golovkin at 40, and that factor gave way to a disconcerting tentativeness in GGG, who rallied late but was in truth not worth the 116-112, 115-113, 115-113 scorecards – all of which favoured Canelo, in any case.

September, the T-Mobile Arena, and stupefying scorecards have been staples of this rivalry, with only the division varying this time around as the middleweight foes clashed at super-middleweight, as Canelo put his IBF, WBC, WBA and WBO titles on the line. Re-live the final meeting between Canelo and GGG, below.

Williams vs Conway – Round 10

Conway presses forward in search of the finish that he needs. Again the fight is paused so that the Briton’s left glove can be re-taped up.

Back under way. Williams lunges forward repeatedly, ducking his head and flinging overhand punches off both wings.

He then opts for a more disciplined approach with a jab to the body.

We’ll go to the judges’ scorecards.

Williams vs Conway – Round 9

Williams puts down Conway with an uppercut! The Briton is quickly back on his feet, and his corner complains that there shouldn’t be a count.

Conway’s nose is bloodied up. He needs a knockout as the final round approaches.

Williams vs Conway – Round 8

A snapping left straight connects for Williams as he steps in at the start of this eighth round – the eighth of 10.

Now Williams jabs to the body, before clinching Conway, who had a couple of strong rounds in the middle of this fight but needs more output here.

A right to the head and left to the body follow from Williams. We’ll have a brief pause in the action as Conway’s left glove is re-taped up.

Back under way. Williams times a jab nicely, just before Conway misses with his own shot.

The Briton then lands two sharp jabs in quick succession, however.

Williams vs Conway – Round 6

Williams looks a tad frustrated here, though he’s likely still ahead on the judges’ scorecards.

“One shot, that’s all he’s got, that same backhand,” Conway’s coach shouts as the Briton blocks a number of straight lefts from Williams.
