Over the course of 12 rounds on Saturday night, “GGG” took on an unfortunate new meaning for Gennady Golovkin, as his chances of securing ‘justice’ in his trilogy with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez were rapidly going, going, and then gone at last.
Judging controversies marred the rivals’ first two encounters, in 2017 and 2018, denying Golovkin one if not two victories over Canelo, and the irony on this occasion was that the Kazakh might have finally been on the ‘right’ end of one, had he not left it too late to start firing. But leaving it late was the theme of this bout, which pitted a prime Canelo at 32 against an aged Golovkin at 40, and that factor gave way to a disconcerting tentativeness in GGG, who rallied late but was in truth not worth the 116-112, 115-113, 115-113 scorecards – all of which favoured Canelo, in any case.
September, the T-Mobile Arena, and stupefying scorecards have been staples of this rivalry, with only the division varying this time around as the middleweight foes clashed at super-middleweight, as Canelo put his IBF, WBC, WBA and WBO titles on the line. Final round. Akhmedov rolls under a left hook effort from Rosado. The American does land a lunging variation of the shot on his next entry, though.
Akhmedov’s head movement is proving to be a better form of defence than his guard; on occasion here he’s shelling up and turning away from Rosado, which isn’t the most convincing strategy.
Akhmedov with fast and fierce flurries now, however, as he looks to end the fight on top. Rosado is going for it with overhands.

Akhmedov is still opting for speed and volume of output rather than power.
Rosado again comes forward like a zombie, however, winging shots. A right overhand almost connects for the American.
Akhmedov tempts fate somewhat by leaning in close, but he slips away in time to avoid Rosado’s uppercut attempts.

Akhmedov presses forward but stays alert, twitching away from Rosado’s jabs when needed.
The American comes forward with a flurry, Akhmedov counters volume with power.
Rosado keeps marching on, though, and lands a few solid right straights.

Rosado with a better spell here as he comes forward and stays busy with body jabs.
Akhmedov is displaying decent head movement and counter punching while moving backwards, however.

Akhmedov with a left hook and right straight. They’re blocked but showcase the Kazakh’s superior speed.
Akhmedov is throwing with increasing volume here. Rosado marches forward in an attempt to assert himself, but Akhmedov keeps flicking out counter punches off the back foot.

Rosado’s legs buckle after a harsh right cross from Akhmedov!
The Kazakh looks to follow up the shot with measured pressure.
Meanwhile, Rosado looks extra alert now but is largely missing with overhand counter punches.

Akhmedov with a one-two and left hook, with all the shots blocked but no doubt getting Rosado’s attention.
Akhmedov sneaks a couple of jabs through Rosado’s guard, but the American comes back with a grazing left hook up top.
Rosado is on the front foot now. He eats a short left hook as he steps in, though.

Akhmedov with a stern right hand to the chest of Rosado. Now he jabs to the body.
Rosado is struggling to time his own jab. He misses with a right straight, too, before Akhmedov lands a clinical right cross to the head of the American.
Rosado is backed up to the ropes and rolls onto a left hook from Akhmedov.

He unloads a fast, four-punch salvo onto the guard of Rosado, who can only limit some of the impact.
