Intense final press conference as Canelo and Golokvin prepare to end rivalry with trilogy bout

Over the course of 12 rounds on Saturday night, “GGG” took on an unfortunate new meaning for Gennady Golovkin, as his chances of securing ‘justice’ in his trilogy with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez were rapidly going, going, and then gone at last.

Judging controversies marred the rivals’ first two encounters, in 2017 and 2018, denying Golovkin one if not two victories over Canelo, and the irony on this occasion was that the Kazakh might have finally been on the ‘right’ end of one, had he not left it too late to start firing. But leaving it late was the theme of this bout, which pitted a prime Canelo at 32 against an aged Golovkin at 40, and that factor gave way to a disconcerting tentativeness in GGG, who rallied late but was in truth not worth the 116-112, 115-113, 115-113 scorecards – all of which favoured Canelo, in any case.

September, the T-Mobile Arena, and stupefying scorecards have been staples of this rivalry, with only the division varying this time around as the middleweight foes clashed at super-middleweight, as Canelo put his IBF, WBC, WBA and WBO titles on the line. Re-live the final meeting between Canelo and GGG, below.

Williams vs Conway – Round 5

Williams staggers somewhat after a right hook from Conway. Was it the impact of the punch or a trip? Hard to say.

Potentially the latter, as he stumbles away later in the round after throwing a straight shot to the body of Conway.

Conway is growing in confidence and briefly fights on the front foot – for the first time in this fight.

Williams vs Conway – Round 4

Conway looks to get Williams off him with a one-two. Now a two-one, so to speak.

Williams with a southpaw left hook to the chest. Conway tries to time his own jab with a bit of irregularity to catch out Williams.

A few nice counter hooks from the Briton late in the round, as Williams seeks big overhand shots with Conway on the ropes.

Williams vs Conway – Round 3

More forward pressure from Willliams, who tries for an uppercut but is beaten to the punch – pun intended – by Conway, who flicks some jabs onto the American’s chin.

Conway rolls under a wide left hook from Williams. Now a left hook lands on “Ammo”’s guard, but he’ll have felt some of the impact there.

Williams looks to stay disciplined and targets the body of Conway.

Conway is starting to clinch a little in this round.

Williams vs Conway – Round 2

Williams’ coach urges him to be “quick” as the second round arrives.

The American jabs to the body of Conway, and again, and again. Next time it’s a left cross to the body. Conway tries to jab to the head of Williams to deter him somewhat, but “Ammo” is maintaining range well.

A left straight gets through for Williams and snaps back the head of Conway, who is now backed into the corner. Another straight left lands for “Ammo”.

Conway tries a right hook to the body, but Williams blocks it.

Williams vs Conway – Round 1

Williams at once looks to get on the front foot and back up Conway, who catches the southpaw with a decent counter right hand, giving himself a chance to circle off the ropes.

Conway the targets the body, but Williams continues to press forward and propels a right hook into the midriff of the Briton.

Canelo vs GGG 3 LIVE

Here’s Indy Sport columnist Steve Bunce on tonight’s main event:

“Saturday’s third fight has nothing to do with the baubles that Canelo and Golovkin shine so religiously and all to do with the complicated layers of justice that motivate so many wealthy boxers.

“It is hard to bet against Canelo, hard to see any signs that his punch resistance has gone; a vulnerable fighter is fodder to Golovkin.

“Canelo on points in another great fight is the simple choice on Saturday night – it is the choice the bookies will shorten as they struggle to keep their cash safe.”
