The film is one of three spin-off Star Wars movies Lucasfilm announced earlier this year, but any further details about the movie's plot have yet to be revealed.
Trank has only previously directed 2012 sci-fi thriller Chronicle, and is currently working on superhero reboot The Fantastic Four, which is due out next year.
The director said he is a huge fan of the sci-fi series, adding the Star Wars Universe “defined my entire childhood”.
In a statement, he said: “The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time.”
Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, said she was “thrilled” to welcome Trank into the Star Wars family.
“He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX,” she said.
Last month, Lucasfilm announced Godzilla director Gareth Edwards was board to direct another spin-off Star Wars movie.
The three spin-off films are to be produced in addition to the Star Wars sequel trilogy, which begins with JJ Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII.
The trilogy will follow The Return of the Jedi in chronology, with Episode VII due to be released in December 2015.
Lupita Nyong’o and Game of Thrones’ actress Gwendoline Christie were recently announced as the latest cast members to join the film.
Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill have been confirmed to reprise their roles in JJ Abrams’ sequel.
