Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal face off before UFC 272 main event

Bragging rights went to Colby Covington on Saturday night as he defeated friend-turned-rival Jorge Masvidal in a seismic grudge match in the main event of UFC 272.

Allegations of unpaid coaching fees, debts to loan sharks, poor parenting and more dominated the back and forths between the former roommates and training partners, leading to their clash in a sold-out T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. In the first two rounds, Covington was warned over an eye poke and lost a position due to a low blow, and he also survived a scare later in the fight after being dropped by an overhand right from Masvidal.

The wrestling specialist dominated the majority of the contest, however, taking down his rival numerous times and seeking chokes against the fence throughout. Covington ultimately secured a unanimous-decision win (49-46, 50-44, 50-45) and proceeded to call out another former teammate in Dustin Poirier, who has teased a move up from lightweight. “I just took care of Miami street trash, now it’s time to take care of Louisiana swamp trash,” Covington said, a US flag draped around his shoulders. “Where you at, Dustin Poirier? You said it’s ‘on sight’. I’ll see you soon, you’re next.”

UFC 272: Covington def. Masvidal

Jorge Masvidal labelled friend-turned-rival Colby Covington a “b***h” and “coward” after losing to his fellow American in the main event of UFC 272 on Saturday.

In one of the biggest grudge matches in UFC history, Covington outwrestled his former teammate to secure a unanimous-decision win – 49-46, 50-44, 50-45 – at a sold-out T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Masvidal and Covington traded antagonistic words in the Octagon as they awaited the judges’ scorecards, while security guards entered the ring to keep the rivals apart.

“I wrestled like s***,” said Masvidal, 37, in a post-fight press conference. “That first takedown I gave up, he took my back, he rode me pretty good.

“I felt like on the feet I definitely did more damage. I didn’t pounce after I dropped him [in the fourth round]. I thought he was gonna shoot [for a takedown], I was thinking of the wrong s***.”

“You said it’s ‘on sight’. I’ll see you soon, you’re next.”

Masvidal: “I was off-beat with the wrestling, I needed to wrestle harder. Sorry to my kids, they’re the only people I want to say sorry to. My wrestling was flat.

“I was off today, flat-footed.”

Round 4

Covington shoots for a takedown from a long way out. Masvidal reads it and shrugs off the attempt.

The pair are closer to the fence now, though, and Covington gets back to work grappling.

Masvidal creates space again but is almost caught with an uppercut. He eats a left hook from Covington.

Covington starts to pour on punches as Masvidal ducks with his back against the fence! Lots landing for Covington, but Masvidal smiles and sticks out his tongue.

Body kick and leg kick by Masvidal, who then DROPS Covington to a knee with a well-timed overhand right!

Covington laughs it off but needs to be careful here! He circles away, allowing himself time to recover.

A good round for Covington, but a big moment for Masvidal.
