Jannik Sinner won his second grand slam title by beating home favourite Taylor Fritz in the US Open final in New York.

The World No 1 produced a clinical display to win 6-3 6-4 7-5 and deny Fritz, who was aiming to end a 21-year wait for an American men’s US Open champion.

Fritz had the support of a star-studded Arthur Ashe crowd, which included Taylor Swift and boyfriend Travis Kelce, but Sinner was too good and showed why he is the best in the world.

Fritz struggled with his serve in the opening set but improved in the second, only for Sinner to raise his game when it counted and take the decisive break at his first opportunity.

Fritz looked to mount a comeback and served for the third set but Sinner broke his opponent and won the next four games in a row to win his first US Open title.

Sinner won the Australian Open title at the start of the season, with the 23-year-old and his young rival Carlos Alcaraz splitting the year’s majors after the Spaniard won the French Open and Wimbledon.

Wow. Did not see this coming, and it’s just what Fritz needed.

He jumps on a couple of loose points from Sinner at the very start of the third set, to get a look at three break points.

Sinner wakes up and saves the first two, firing the forehand winner. One more chance for Fritz, but Sinner lands the big first serve!

0-40 to deuce.

ACE from Sinner! And then another huge serve out wide! That hold could be as big as a break for himself. \

Five points in a row from the Italian, and that will suck the life out of his opponent. Fritz had to win that.

US Open final: Jannik Sinner 6-3 6-4 Taylor Fritz - Sinner wins second set!

Super impressive from Sinner, who has inherited some of the same traits of great champions Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer showed so often down the years.

He has a champion’s sense of timing. And he’s now a set away from his second grand slam title. He won the Australian Open at the start of the year from two sets down to Daniil Medvedev.

Now, Fritz needs a comeback.

A rare first serve missed from Fritz to start a must-win game... and Sinner takes advantage to get into the rally. Fritz then sends his forehand long.

A chance here. Fritz stretches the court and hits the line, but Sinner stands up to it. Fritz nets on the backhand, and a huge chance now at 0-30.

Huge moments: Firtz sends down the big serve and forehand strike, only to then net on the backhand again! Sinner dropped deep on the return, and was then so solid on the baseline.

Set point on 15-40.

AMAZING backhand from Sinner down the line! An incredible switch-up from the Italian, breaking Fritz and taking the second set!

CLINICAL from Sinner! That was an even set, but he struck when it counted and just as Fritz dropped his level of serving by an inch.

Fritz with 15-15 on the Sinenr serve for a third successive game, but the Italian pulls out a lovely drop shot to leave his opponent stranded.

Another long return from Fritz, but a stong serve from Sinner. This second set has been very serve dominant, with no break point chances so far.

Back to the baseline rally, Fritz fires the forehand long. He moves back ahead, ramping the pressure onto Fritz once again at the end of this second set.

US Open final: Jannik Sinner 6-3 3-2 Taylor Fritz*

A half-chance for Fritz after flashing a really nice backhand return winner up the line. He had a look at a forehand from mid-court on 15-15, but found the net. From there, he misses on the return and then mis-hits on a wild swing on the forehand.

Sinner ticks another game off.

Fritz produces a fine return against the Sinner second serve to get a look at 15-30, but Sinner’s response is strong. He flashes the forehand winner and then a big serve to get back to 40-30.

Fritz lets fly on the backhand return but goes long.
