US Open final LIVE: Jannik Sinner vs Taylor Fritz result and reaction as World No 1 wins second grand slam

Jannik Sinner let his tennis do the talking as he won the US Open for the first time.

The world number one came into the tournament under a cloud following his anti-doping scandal, where he escaped a ban despite two positive tests in March.

Many people thought Sinner was lucky not to be suspended but he put all that to one side to claim a second grand slam title of the year by ending Taylor Fritz’s American dream in New York.

The Italian, who beat Britain’s Jack Draper in the semi-final, won 6-3 6-4 7-5 to add this crown to the title he won in Australia.

Fritz, backed by a partisan crowd on Arthur Ashe, was hoping to become the first American to win the men’s US Open title since Andy Roddick in 2003.

By winning this year’s Australian Open and US Open, Jannik Sinner is the first man in 47 years to win his first two grand slam titles in the same season.

Not even Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic managed that, and you have to go back to Guillermo Vilas, who won the French Open and US Open in 1977. Jimmy Connors is the only other man to do it, but he won three in 1974 (Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open).

Only three other players have won the Australian Open and US Open on hard court in the same season. Djokovic and Federer both did it three times and Mats Wilander did it in 1988.

“This title means so much. The last period of my career was not easy. I love tennis, I practice for this, but I realised off the court there is a life, I would like to dedicate this title to my aunt, she is really not feeling well and I don’t know how much I still have here in my life. It’s so nice I can share a positive moment in her life - she was a very important person in my life, and still is.”

We’ll now have the trophy ceremony and will start by hearing from the runner-up, Taylor Fritz. Like Jessica Pegula against Aryna Sabalenka yesterday, he couldn’t stretch the final out and loses to the Australian Open champion as they won their first US Open title.

Fritz: “It’s been an amazing two weeks and first off congrats to Jannik - he played a great match, it was really impressive, too good.

“I want to say thanks to my team. It’s been an amazing run. Thanks to the fans for everything this week. Being American at the US Open is incredible.

“I know we’ve been waiting for a champion for a long time. Sorry I couldn’t get it done this time - but I’m going to keep working and hopefully get it done next time.”

Fritz hangs his head while Sinner goes to his box and embraces his team. The American is unable to become the first men’s champion since 2003, but Sinner was too good today and showed why he’s World No 1.

There were some seriously impressive moments there, especially at the end of the second and third sets. He won the big points, it’s as simple as that.
