Andy Murray addresses retirement rumours ahead of his 15th Wimbledon

Andy Murray was beaten in his final match before Wimbledon as Holger Rune won 6-4 6-4 in their exhibition match at the Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic at Hurlingham. Murray was unable to use his superior experience on grass to his advantage as the 20-year-old Dane broke late in the first set and early in the second on his way to victory.

The 36-year-old Murray will now head to Wimbledon on the back of a mixed grass-court campaign that has brought titles at Challenger events at Surbiton and Nottingham, but has been followed by two defeats in a row following his first-round exit at Queen’s to Alex de Minuar and this loss to the world No 6 Rune at Hurlingham Club.

It will be a reminder of the challenge that awaits Murray in SW19, with the two-time Wimbledon champion set to be unseeded and at the mercy of Friday’s draw. Follow live scores and updates as Andy Murray faces Holger Rune ahead of Wimbledon

Andy Murray 0-0 Holger Rune

Andy Murray will serve first.

He lands his first up the centre, but reliniquishes control of the point with a shallow forehand. Rune overcooks his drop shot but still draws an error, Murray prodding into the top of the net. 0-15.

A swiped forehand return levels things up, but Rune produces a beauty across court, beating a grunting Murray, whose lunge isn’t long enough to retrieve a nicely controlled forehand winner.

But a second error on that side gifts Murray another point. That’s pushed long, too - 40-30.

Murray just struggling a little to get down, it would appear, conceding deuce with a slightly stiff slice backhand as Rune moves towards the net.

But a well managed point earns the Scot another chance to close out the opening game, which he duly does as Rune blocks a backhand wide.

Where Murray had to toil, Holger Rune finds things rather easier to get on the board, rushing rapidly to a hold to 15.

Andy Murray 2-1 Holger Rune

A lackadaisical forehand into the net sees Andy Murray fall behind again in his second service game, the veteran not quite putting the power through. Holger Rune, conversely, has the opposite problem, launching into an attempted forehand winner and biffing it a foot too far.

The two trade points to deuce, before Murray raises a hand of apology after swatting an overhead winner into a spectator in the second row. No harm done, it would appear, and the game is his as Rune lifts a lob long.

Andy Murray 2-2 Holger Rune

One of the line judges lets out an almost anguished cry as what looks a smart Andy Murray passing shot skips off the tramline grass. Only an inch or so out, at most.

A tweener! Entirely unneccessary from Holger Rune, reflecting the low stakes on this contest, with the Dane happy enough to concede a point at 40-0, knowing he can simply square affairs again with an ace.

Andy Murray 3-2 Holger Rune

Better from Andy Murray, beginning to get those legs moving. He pushes a forehand down the centre as Holger Rune guesses right, wrongly, as the Scot approaches the net.

A serve on the line allows Murray a simple serve-and-volley winner, and the chalk flies again as he slams one down the centre to hold in comfort.

Andy Murray 3-3 Holger Rune

That’s a glorious lob from Andy Murray, an arc of triumph over an eager Holger Rune, who had hurried to the net ready to finish the point off.

And here’s a glimpse for Murray, earning a break point. A second serve, too...emphatically put away by the Dane to shut the door.

Another chance to breach Rune’s service comes and goes in a wafty forehand that ends up in the net’s embrace. Rune eventually holds, but that’s the first time that Murray has really challenged his serve.

Andy Murray 4-3 Holger Rune

Those Andy Murray misses threaten to prove costly as he again falls into difficulty in his next service game, but a backhand across court wrong foots a skidding Rune, saving a break point.

Rune seems mildly surprised when a Murray serve down the centre is called good. There’s no doubt about that one, though, a hint of slice as Rune plays no shot to be aced twice in two points.

Seven games, seven holds.

Andy Murray 4-4 Holger Rune

Tit for tat once more. Four apiece, with Rune clenching a fist of celebration.

Andy Murray 4-5 Holger Rune

Holger Rune breaks! It’s loose from Andy Murray, slicing a low backhand into the net and then double faulting. Rune nudges ahead and will serve for the first set.
