Andy Murray will play fellow Brit Ryan Peniston in the opening round of Wimbledon, and could face a blockbuster match against Stefanos Tsitsipas or Dominic Thiem should he progress to the second round.

The 36-year-old has hopes of reaching the deep end of the tournament after the two-time Wimbledon champion won titles at Surbiton and Nottingham, but Murray will face one of the world’s top players in the second round should he face Tsitsipas, the tournament’s fifth seed, or Thiem, the former US Open champion.

Before then, Murray will open against the 26-year-old Peniston in all-British clash on Centre Court on Tuesday. Peniston is ranked 267th in the world and received a wildcard for the Wimbledon main draw.

Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek are top seeds for this year’s Wimbledon while Novak Djokovic and Elena Rybakina will be looking to defend their titles on the iconic grass courts of SW19.

Andy Murray’s legacy endures — and his response to Wimbledon controversy shows why

Ten years: who knows where they went. Even now, watching back Andy Murray’s victory in the 2013 Wimbledon final manages to tie a knot in your stomach. The pressure and weight of history, climaxing in that tortuous final game, feel just as overwhelming, right until that last shot from Novak Djokovic drifts long in the haze of Centre Court. That winning moment - “the waiting is over!” - still raises goosebumps on your arm.

The decade anniversary of Murray’s defining moment, and arguably the greatest individual triumph in British sporting history, naturally brings time for reflection: a celebration of how an awkward, gangly outsider who struggled to be fully embraced by the public, persevered through heartbreak and expectation to become a much-loved champion, a player universally respected for his values and commitment to equality and fairness as much as his determination to end Britain’s 77-year wait for a men’s singles winner.

Andy Murray to face fellow Brit in Wimbledon first round

Andy Murray will take on fellow British player Ryan Peniston in the first round of Wimbledon.

The two-time former champion successfully avoided a seed and will be heavily favoured to beat wild card Peniston, who is ranked 267.

It is only the second time Murray has played a fellow countryman at the All England Club, with the Scot beating Liam Broady in the first round in 2016 before claiming his second title.

Things then get much tougher, with the winner of that clash taking on either fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas or former US Open champion Dominic Thiem, although neither is particularly comfortable on grass.

There were daunting assignments handed to the two young British debutants - 20-year-old Arthur Fery will play third seed Daniil Medvedev while 22-year-old George Loffhagen meets sixth seed Holger Rune.

Developing news from Germany where World No 1 Iga Swiatek has pulled out of her semi-final match in Hamburg due to “possible food poisoning”.

That’s a concern ahead of the start of Wimbledon on Monday.

Looking through the rest of the men’s draw, and you’ve got to say it’s a good one for Novak Djokovic. Carlos Alcaraz could have difficult early tests against Alexander Zverev or Alex de Minaur, while Holger Rune and Frances Tiafoe are also in his quarter.

Djokovic’s quarter looks pretty comfortable - although Stan Wawrinka and Hubert Hurkacz could be floating in the early rounds. There is also the possibility of a quarter-final meeting with Nick Kyrgios, should the Australian return to form in SW19.

Watch out for Brits Arthur Fery and George Loffhagen - they play Daniil Medvedev and Holger Rune respectively in the opening round!

Well, well.

All eyes were on Andy Murray and the two-time Wimbledon champion has landed against a top seed in the opening rounds.

But... it still looks like a decent draw for the 36-year-old. Should he progress past Peniston, in an all-British match that looks set for Centre Court, Murray will face either Stefanos Tsitsipas or Dominic Thiem.

Tsitsipas is the tournament’s fifth seed and three-time grand slam finalist while Thiem is the former US Open champion, but neither are that strong on grass.

Tsitsipas will be the favourite to progress and Murray would be confident of his chances should they meet in round two. Murray defeated Tsitsipas on grass in Stuttgart last year and the Greek has a 1-3 record on grass so far this season.
