Eddie Jones previews England's Autumn International match vs Argentina

Winger Emiliano Boffelli scored 25 points as Argentina shocked a misfiring England 30-29 to claim their first win at Twickenham since 2006 and end a 10-game losing streak against the team they face in their opening game at the World Cup.

Boffelli scored a superb try and kicked six penalties as the Pumas went toe to toe with the favourites on a horrible wet day to give them a huge boost ahead of next September’s Marseille clash.

England led 16-12 at half-time, with Joe Cokanasiga’s barrelling try a rare attacking highlight and Boffelli landing four penalties to keep Argentina in touch.

The Pumas surged clear as Boffelli finished off a slick backline move and Santiago Carreras added a second try with a 50-metre breakaway, only for England’s replacement scrum half Jack van Poortvliet to score a minute after coming on. Argentina led by a point and it stayed that way after two more penalties apiece as England never threatened to turn it round and their November programme got off to a disappointing start.

Relive all the action as England lose to Argentina:

England 3-6 Argentina

18 mins: A couple of nice touches in the England attack before Steward loses the ball in contact. He’s pinged for a knock-on but a replay clearly shows he offloaded the ball backwards and then it hit an Argentine arm so the decision is reversed. It means an England scrum in the home 22.

England 3-6 Argentina

17 mins: A penalty gives England field position just inside the opposition 22 and the lineout to Itoje is clean.

Big carry from Tuilagi towards the left and Cokanasiga makes a few yards with a bruising run of his own. England set up well

15 mins: Argentina go right from the scrum and make a mess of it but let off by England being offside.

Another simple kick for Boffelli and he restores the Pumas’ lead

England 3-3 Argentina

14 mins: Debutant Coles takes his eyes off the ball with Mallia bearing down on him in the 22 and spills it forward. A Pumas attacking scrum.

England 3-3 Argentina - PEN Farrell

12 mins: Good response by England. They go through a couple of phases and then Argentina are pinged for offside.

Kickable penalty in front of the posts, midway in the Pumas half and he slots it with no issues. Squares things up at 3-3

England 0-3 Argentina - PEN Boffelli

10 mins: And they do indeed. A simple kick for Emiliano Boffelli who bisects the uprights to put the visitors ahead.

England 0-0 Argentina

9 mins: Free-kick at the scrum and Vunipola taps and goes but the ball is stripped from him, Argentina kick ahead and reclaim the ball in the England 22.

Penalty for offside. Argentina may go for the posts here.

England 0-0 Argentina

7 mins: A few crash ball are well defended so Smith tries a crossfield kick but it’s too far ahead of Steward and Carreras can safely claim and call the mark. Big kick clear to shift field position.

Then a first drop of the day. Carreras charges forward to try and catch another long kick but the Newcastle winger spills the ball. England scrum on the Pumas ten-metre line. First of the day.

Luke Baker6 November 2022 14:23

England 0-0 Argentina

5 mins: Itoje wins the lineout and sets up the maul. Well defended by the Pumas so England opt for some phase play. Carries for Nowell and Tuilagi among others

Luke Baker6 November 2022 14:21

England 0-0 Argentina

4 mins: Brilliant claim by Steward as he leaps above Mallia to win a Youngs box-kick. He’s so good under the high ball.

England then win the latest kicking battle, Argentina pinged for obstruction and it’s a penalty inside the Pumas half. Possible kickable but England go for touch. Lineout in the 22.
