England v Argentina LIVE rugby: Final score and result from autumn international as England lose by a point
England 29-30 Argentina: Emiliano Boffelli scored 25 points as the Pumas beat England at Twickenham for the first time since 2006
Winger Emiliano Boffelli scored 25 points as Argentina shocked a misfiring England 30-29 to claim their first win at Twickenham since 2006 and end a 10-game losing streak against the team they face in their opening game at the World Cup.
Boffelli scored a superb try and kicked six penalties as the Pumas went toe to toe with the favourites on a horrible wet day to give them a huge boost ahead of next September’s Marseille clash.
England led 16-12 at half-time, with Joe Cokanasiga’s barrelling try a rare attacking highlight and Boffelli landing four penalties to keep Argentina in touch.
The Pumas surged clear as Boffelli finished off a slick backline move and Santiago Carreras added a second try with a 50-metre breakaway, only for England’s replacement scrum half Jack van Poortvliet to score a minute after coming on. Argentina led by a point and it stayed that way after two more penalties apiece as England never threatened to turn it round and their November programme got off to a disappointing start.
Relive all the action as England lose to Argentina:
England 29-30 Argentina
74 mins: Argentina burn some time with a couple of reset scrums and then win the penalty, so Boffelli kicks to touch around the 22. Can England pinch the ball back?
Prop Joe Heyes and back-rower Jack Willis - currently clubless after Wasps went bust - are on for England.
WATCH: Van Poortvliet’s instant impact
It already feels like a lifetime ago but here’s Jack van Poortvliet scoring less thana minute after coming on:
England 29-30 Argentina
72 mins: Great carry by Coles as he makes a half-break to gain good ground and put England on the front foot. He’s then pinged later in the move for crossing although it was probably the wrong decision by Van Poortvliet and he should have given the ball to the big lock.
Argentina can clear and relieve the pressure. Nowell then knocks the ball on in the air and it’s a Pumas scrum in midfield.
England 29-30 Argentina - PEN Boffelli
70 mins: Lined up by Boffelli and he draws it in from outside the right upright to between the posts. Nice kick and the Pumas in front once more.
England 29-27 Argentina
69 mins: Another penalty conceded by England, Sinckler not rolling away and going off his feet at the breakdown, and the frustration is building.
Fairly central, albeit from long range, and Boffelli is pointing to the posts again...
England 29-27 Argentina
68 mins: Henry Slade, initially not selected for England this autumn but drafted into the squad after injuries, is on for Manu Tuilagi.
A decent game for the big centre, showing some of his unique power but he didn’t have lots of carrying opportunities.
England 29-27 Argentina - PEN Farrell
66 mins: An intriguing final 15 minutes that we’re on for here.
A few phases, lacking a bit of fluidity, but England win multiple penalties and Farrell points to the posts. He slots it through from out to the left and the lead shifts back to the hosts
England 26-27 Argentina - PEN Boffelli
63 mins: Luke Cowan-Dickie tackles a man off the ball and gifts Argentina a penalty.
Boffelli isn’t in the mood to turn down those today and he bangs it over from around 40 metres. The Pumas back in front.
England 26-24 Argentina - PEN Farrell
60 mins: England move the ball up the field and get a lineout in the 22 as a perfect platform.
They’re going backwards but Argentina pinged at the breakdown and it gives Farrell a simple penalty in front of the sticks that he duly slots.
