From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The first day of the Isle of Man TT combined entertainment and tragedy as Peter Hickman and Lee Johnston took victories overshadowed by a rider's death.
The opening RST Superbike race was red flagged due to an accident, which claimed the life of rider Daley Mathison. Race leaders Hickman and Dean Harrison had embarked on their third of four laps when the red flags were brought out due to a crash at Snugborough, on the run towards Union Mills early in the lap, which led to the standings at the end of lap two being used to determine the results and award Hickman his third TT victory. It has since been confirmed by Mathison's wife that he died following the accident.
The second race of the day saw the Birchall brothers, Ben and Tom, power to victory with a new race record in the Locate.IM Sider Race 1, and in the final race of the day Johnston clinched his first victory at the TT in the Monster Energy Supersport Race One ahead of James Hillier and Hickman. Monday schedule
10:45am: RST Superbike Race
1pm: Locate.IM Sidecar Race 1
3pm: Lightweight qualifying
3:55pm: TT Zero qualifying
6:30pm: Monster Energy Supersport Race 1
Lap 1: As the field charge down towards Glen Helen, a little interesting snippet for you is that the Birchall brother Ben and Tom are working the pits for McGuinness for this race, despite going out and winning the Sidecar TT a few hours ago. The beers will have to stay on ice for now.
Lap 1: Cummins reaches Glen Helen and has Harrison witihn 10 seconds behind him, having taken two seconds out of the 10-second gap. McGuinness is a further 10 seconds behind, but Hillier goes top of the timesheets! He's three seconds faster than Harrison, as is Gary Johnson as he's half-a-second faster than Harrison. Dunlop slots into fourth, just four seconds off the leader's pace, and hes ahead of Hickman who's a tenth of a second slower.
Lap 1: Lee Johnston pops into second at Glen Helen! The No 11 appears just 1.367s off the leader. We've got one hell of a race on our hands here.
Lap 1: Hillier remains ahead of Gary Johnsn and Harrison at Ballaugh, but we're going to have to wait quite a bit at each checkpoint as Lee Johnston went off 100 seconds after Harrison and 70 seconds behind Hillier. Here he comes, and he's still second by a gap of 1.6s.
Lap 1: Think it can't be any closer? The top eight are separated by 6.3s!
Lap 1: Hickman put in the fastest sector from Glen Helen to Ballaugh, and it my just be that he's taking his famous slow start before really getting going.
Lap 1: Into Ramsey the leaders come. Harrison and Cummins are away with about four seconds between them on the road. Both McGuinness and Hutchinson are sadly not on the pace as they drop down the order, but Gary Johnson very much is. Lee Johnston arrives and he's cut the gap to just 0.648s!
It's Hillier from Johnston and Johnson, with Harrison and Hickman fourth and fifth and far from out of it as they head over the Mountain.
Lap 1: Harrison continues to eat into the gap to Cummins, with just five seconds splitting them on the road, but on time it's still Hillier out in front at the Bungalow as he holds a 4.8s lead over Harrison. Here comes Hickman and Johnston...and Johnston leads! The Yamaha hits the front by 1.2s with Hickman passing Gary Johnson and Harrison for third.
Lap 1: As they cross the line to complete lap one, it's Johnston out in front - but it's anyone's race!
