After Georgia and Fiji raised the curtain on today’s action, it’s the turn of the two group runners-up to take centre stage in the third-place play-off. It’s of course not the game that either wanted to be in, with Ireland coming unstuck against England earlier in the tournament while Scotland lost their decider to the French, but both sides have signalled their intent to end the year on a high with the Six Nations just around the corner.
Ireland will be led by returning captain Johnny Sexton who has recovered from a hamstring strain suffered in the opening game against Wales, while Scotland turn to debutant fly-half Jaco van der Welt in the hope of finding a replacement for injured duo Finn Russell and Adam Hastings. 17 mins: Wales 7-0 Italy
Williams breaks away after good work from Rees-Zammit, but the full-back is stopped short and is in considerable pain off the pitch as play continues. Wales go through the phases and thing they’ve scored, but it’ll go to the TMO…
15 mins: Wales 7-0 Italy
Both teams get a telling off for a skirmish between the two sides, although Canna’s taken exception to a clearout by Liam Williams as he’s caught him in the face with his arm. Referee Wayne Barnes wants a quick look at it, but says it’s a legal cleanout and waves continue with a Wales penalty, which Sheedy sends to touch.
7 mins: Wales 7-0 Italy
That was lovely stuff from the Welsh. Alun Wyn Jones gets up to pressure an Italian lineout and the ball falls into the hands of Kieran Hardy. Play continues as Wales work from left to right, and Faletau times his pass perfectly to release Tipuric on a cut-back line to break the defence. The flanker dummies full-back Trulla to see him off, before releasing Hardy on his shoulder to go over and ground the ball at the second attempt as he slides over the line. Sheedy converts and Wales have the lead.
4 mins: Wales 0-0 Italy
Italy get a good passage of play together to attack the Welsh line, but when Steyn looks for the offload that could break the defence, he inly finds Liam Williams who is able to counter. Wales then draw the penalty out of the Italians and escape the danger.
2 mins: Wales 0-0 Italy
Italy knock the ball on and give possession to Wales, who send the ball skywards and allow North to take a good catch inside the Italian half. However, he presents the ball out of the ruck and quickly pulls it back in, but not quick enough as Wayne Barnes spots it and penalises the centre.
1 mins: Wales 0-0 Italy
Italy win an immediate penalty off the kick-off as Tipuric doesn’t release the tackle before going for the ball. Not the start Wales wanted to make.
1 mins: Wales 0-0 Italy
Wales kick off and the match is under way!
