After Georgia and Fiji raised the curtain on today’s action, it’s the turn of the two group runners-up to take centre stage in the third-place play-off. It’s of course not the game that either wanted to be in, with Ireland coming unstuck against England earlier in the tournament while Scotland lost their decider to the French, but both sides have signalled their intent to end the year on a high with the Six Nations just around the corner.
Ireland will be led by returning captain Johnny Sexton who has recovered from a hamstring strain suffered in the opening game against Wales, while Scotland turn to debutant fly-half Jaco van der Welt in the hope of finding a replacement for injured duo Finn Russell and Adam Hastings. 33 mins: Wales 14-10 Italy
Lovely try for Italy, but where was the defence?! Italy get a good maul set up, and when it halts its progress the come left to Canna. He chips behind the defensive line and there’s no one at home, allowing Marco Zanon to collect the ball and dive over for the simplest of tries. Garbisi converts and the lead is cut to four.
31 mins: Wales 14-3 Italy
Italy take clean possession from a lineout on the Welsh 10m line and North is penalised for not releasing the tackle, giving the visitors the chance to kick to touch inside the 22. It also results in a warning from Barnes to Wales to let go of the player and “stop taking risks around the ball”, which is not one you hear too often. Can Italy take further points here?
29 mins: Wales 14-3 Italy
Garbisi’s effort it on the money and Italy are on the board.
28 mins: Wales 14-0 Italy
Italy win a penalty with Sheedy trapped at the bottom of the ruck and unable to roll away. They have a concern on their hands though with the flanker Meyer down injured, but after treatment he’s ok to continue and Garbisi will kick at goal for the first time this evening.
26 mins: Wales 14-0 Italy
Lloyd, who is now at full-back with Adams back to the wing, carries the ball back into the 22 before passing to Rees-Zammit, who fires the ball into touch to give Italy the lineout inside the Welsh 22. That was a big error from the back-three pair.
25 mins: Wales 14-0 Italy
It comes to nothing as Italy pinch the the lineout and clear their lines, cueing another period of aerial ping-pong. It hasn’t been the most attractive of games so far…
24 mins: Wales 14-0 Italy
Ioane gives away a penalty for a high tackle on new arrival Lloyd, and it allows Sheedy to fire the ball to touch just outside the 22. Wales smell blood and want an early third here.
22 mins: Wales 14-0 Italy
Faletau makes another break and again links up with Tipuric on his shoulder. The ball is recycled quickly and sent on to Alun Wyn Jones, but the lock tries to force it and Italy win back the ball, before winning the penalty as Wyn Jones goes into the ruck from the side. However, the touch-finder is kept in play and Wales can build another attack.
18 mins: Wales 14-0 Italy
The pick and goes work as Sam Parry is sent over with help from Francis, with replays showing he kept hold of the ball to score as he went over the line. Sheedy adds the extras, but Liam Williams is still in a lot of pain and he’s replaced early on by Ioan Lloyd, meaning Josh Adams will move to full-back.
