Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Ireland take on Scotland at the Aviva Stadium this afternoon as the duo kick off their Six Nations campaign.

Gregor Townsend knows his Scottish side will have to pull out all the stops to defeat and Ireland outift who have won 15 of their past 16 Tests at home and are beginning a new era under head coach Andy Farrell.

Wales have set the early running with fast start against Italy in Cardiff at lunchtime and both of these sides will want to join them in beginning with a win. Follow it live after the conclusion of Wales vs Italy:

Ireland will be firmly focused on efforts this week for now, though, with a game to close out.

Scotland are again struggling with their discipline, and Mathieu Raynal appears to be beginning to lose his patience. Stuart Hogg is in his ear a little too often, perhaps, as his side are pinged for another breakdown infringement. They do ensure Ireland make nothing of it by again bringing a maul to floor incredibly effectively 30 metres from their line.

Ireland build again, though, as Jacob Stockdale rises above Sean Maitland to claim an Ali Price high kick. Bundee Aki has enjoyed the arcing run to the outside this afternoon and again makes metres around the bend, but Iain Henderson's fumble ends the movement.

Henderson is in the thick of things defensively now, clashing with fellow red wood Jonny Gray, standing him up in the tackle but then sabotaging the jackaling work of CJ Stander by failing to get out of the way after bringing Gray to the floor.

Stuart Hogg points to the posts.

PENALTY! Ireland 16-12 Scotland

Another nudge between the posts from Adam Hastings. Still very much anyone's game as the benches begin to empty.

One of those substitutions is the re-withdrawl of Cian Healy - Andrew Porter can cover both sides of the scrum, and replaces the loosehead. That means Tadhg Furlong is going 80 minutes - no mean feat for a tighthead.

A positive contribution from John Cooney, able to get his hands on the ball for the first time since arriving in an attacking capacity and lofting a lovely kick into space in the corner to force a defensive lineout for Scotland.

Thrown well, and cleared to somewhere near halfway.

Perhaps the loudest cheer a lineout take has ever received as the Leinster lighthouse is hoisted into the sky to claim Rob Herring's throw. A favourite son of this parish, Devin Toner is back doing what he does best in an Ireland shirt after his surprise World Cup squad exclusion.

John Cooney follows up Toner's take and a meaty maul with another well-weighted box kick. Blair Kinghorn just about bests Andrew Conway aerially, but there's a real scramble for the ball on the floor, with Ireland ruled to have just knocked it on. Scotland scrum 15 metres from their own line. George Horne is on for Ali Price and will have the put-in.

Scotland have cleared well, on the whole, this afternoon, and again their exit is strong from the set-piece, Stuart Hogg haring after the long bomb to chop down Jordan Larmour before he can build his head of steam.

Johnny Sexton launches a Garryowen which comes down perfectly on the 22, with Adam Hastings surprisingly unopposed as he claims the mark. Ah, that would be why - Sam Johnson has barged Andrew Conway out of the way as the wing looks to ready his leap to compete with Hastings. A penalty in front of the posts.

PENALTY! Ireland 19-12 Scotland

Johnny Sexton widens the margin to seven points. That might be enough, you know.

A number of changes as the game moves into the last eight minutes or so. A Six Nations debut for Ross Byrne with Johnny Sexton done for the day after that fourth penalty goal, and an Ireland debut for promising Ronan Kelleher, who replaces Rob Herring. A really solid showing from Herring.
