Gregor Townsend knows his Scottish side will have to pull out all the stops to defeat and Ireland outift who have won 15 of their past 16 Tests at home and are beginning a new era under head coach Andy Farrell.
Wales have set the early running with fast start against Italy in Cardiff at lunchtime and both of these sides will want to join them in beginning with a win. Follow it live after the conclusion of Wales vs Italy:

What have you done Stuart Hogg?
Oh my! This is one of the worst butcherings you have ever seen! Hogg is all alone on the left as Scotland play with a penalty advantage, and he catches with no Irish defender within three metres of him a body length from the line.
He puts the ball in his right hand and gets ready to dot down for the most simple of scores, but out of his grasp the ball slithers as he looks to put it down and the try will be chalked off. That's a horrible moment for the new Scotland captain.
Scotland do have a penalty, though, and they'll go for goal to narrow the margin.
Ireland have yet more injury strife. Dave Kilcoyne, on the pitch for barely a couple of minutes, has taken a blow to the head as he crouches low to tackle a ball carrier, and he appears to have been knocked out, much like Caelan Doris early in the first half. Cian Healy is back with us. That's another real blow for Ireland, with an impact substitute lost so soon after coming on to the park.

Ireland try to build phases in midfield on the halfway line, but are rather going nowhere before Adam Hastings' tackle attempt slips up beyond the shoulders of Johnny Sexton. High tackle, a penalty, and a lineout inside the Irish 22.

Scotland repel the maul, but Ireland again find joy around the fringes with powerful carriers brought onto the ball at pace. One-out runners and pick-and-goes enable Ireland to move to within five metres of the Scottish line, with Tadhg Furlong again catching the eye with a step off the left to beat two in a phonebox. Scottish hands ruin the quality of Conor Murray's ball - another penalty, and another three points should Johnny Sexton perform the simple task of knocking over a simple shot from the tee.

How Scotland needed that Hogg score. Iain Henderson grabs another misfired lineout, this time thrown by replacement Stuart McInally who is now with us, and Ireland attack, with Furlong wrestling his way through three bodies to make yet more metres.
A grubber along the touchline from Robbie Henshaw is gathered by Adam Hastings but the fly-half has no choice but to hop into touch as four Irish shirts converge.

A remarkable steal at the maul from the little back-rower, somehow burrowing up through the middle of it through to ball-handler Josh van der Flier and snatch the ball from his opposite number to win the turnover. Ali Price is taken off the ball and Scotland have the penalty! That's a vital intervention.
A ripple of excitement at the Aviva Stadium as the most in-form man in Ireland enters the fray - John Cooney is introduced in the place of Conor Murray. A so-so showing from Murray, I'd say. A strong half-hour from Cooney here and Andy Farrell will have a real decision to make for Wales next weekend.
