From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

England suffered a shock defeat to Sri Lanka in the Cricket World Cup at Headingley.

Eoin Morgan's men were on a high after a blistering innings from the skipper himself powered them to a 150-run win over Afghanistan at Old Trafford on Tuesday. But they came crashing down to earth at Headingley as Lasith Malinga shredded their top order on the way to a famous win.

Here's how it played out:

Sri Lanka: 37-2 (8.3 overs)

Different story with Fernando on strike though.

Two, followed by another four, this time a pull leg side into the gap. He's on 31 from 25 balls...

Sri Lanka: 37-2 (9 overs)

Three dot balls to end Woakes' fifth over...

Sri Lanka: 48-2 (10 overs) Fernando 41, Mendis 4

Once again, Mendis picks up a single while Fernando waits till the end of the over to punish Archer...

Ball four: 4, leg side pull!

Ball five: 6, leg side pull! Stunning shot, 89m!

A pause after that six as the umpires try to find a new cricket ball...

Ball six: Archer bowls a good yorker, dot ball.

End of the first powerplay, and Mark Wood is in to replace Chris Woakes.

Sri Lanka: 56-2 (11 overs)

Mixed bag from Wood in his first over.

Three singles, a wide down leg side, and then a four clipped off the edge of the bat from Fernando, who is four away now from a half-century.

Ben Stokes comes in to replace Jofra Archer.

Kieran Jackson21 June 2019 11:22

Sri Lanka: 59-2 (12 overs)

Decent start from Stokes - only three singles from that over.

Fernando is on 47...

WICKET! Sri Lanka: 62-3. Fernando, c Rashid b Wood, 49 (12.5 overs)

Oh no, Fernando what are you doing!

On 49, the no.3 hits the ball, open-face, straight into the hands of third man Adil Rashid - Fernando looks as bemused as everyone else with the shot he has just played!

Shake of heads on the Sri Lankan balcony too...

Fernando goes for 49 off 39 balls.

Sri Lanka: 62-3 (13 overs)

The batsmen crossed, and Mendis fends off a full toss to end the over.

Angelo Matthews is now at the crease, coming in at number five.

Kieran Jackson21 June 2019 11:32

Sri Lanka: 63-3 (14 overs) Mendis 10 (25), Matthews 0 (6)

A Mendis single, and Matthews yet to get off the mark as five dot balls follow.

Strong start from Ben Stokes.
