England face a fight to the keep their Ashes campaign afloat after Josh Hazlewood squashed a brave resistance from Rory Burns and Joe Root on day three of the fourth Test.

Responding to Australia's formidable declaration mark of 497 for eight, England closed on 200 for five, still 98 short of the follow-on target at Old Trafford.

Their hopes of saving the game and the urn were aided by conditions in Manchester, with morning rain and bad light in the evening allowing just 64 overs possible out a planned 98, while for long periods Burns (81) and Root (71) appeared in control of matters.

In the end the pair shared a defiant stand of 141 in nearly 53 overs - their second-century partnership and England's biggest of the series - only for Hazlewood to intervene with a late, decisive spell. Re-live the action live:

Teams

Australia: Warner, Harris, Labuschagne, Smith, Head, Wade, Paine, Cummins, Starc, Lyon, Hazlewood.

ENG 212-5, Stokes 13, Bairstow 8

This could be an opportunity for England to score some runs. Starc wasn't at his best yesterday and if he brings that bad form into this spell Bairstow and Stokes may be able to capitalise.

ENG 212-5, Stokes 13, Bairstow 8

Starc comes over the wicket to Jonny Bairstow, angling the ball across him looking to swing it back in.

Bairstow defends the first three deliveries. There is a bit of shape there for Starc.

ENG 213-5, Stokes 13, Bairstow 9

Bairstow manages to work Starc away for one and Stokes sees out the rest of the over.

As expected Josh Hazlewood comes on at the James Anderson end. He needs one wicket for another five wicket haul.

ENG 213-5, Stokes 13, Bairstow 9

Hazlewood raps Bairstow on the pads first up. Australia appeal but it looks like it's too high and going down leg.

Marais Erasmus agrees and he gives it not out.

ENG 217-5, Stokes 13, Bairstow 13

Hazlewood is getting the ball to come into Bairstow off the pitch. He bowls it a little fuller and Bairstow drives the ball back down the ground for four.

ENG 217-5, Stokes 13, Bairstow 13

No alarms yet as Bairstow defends against Hazlewood.  81 needed to avoid the follow on.

ENG 219-5, Stokes 15, Bairstow 13

The surface continues to be good for batting. The bounce is true and Mitchell Starc is getting a touch of swing.

He bowls a back of a length delivery to Stokes who pulls it away for two runs to the deep mid-wicket fielder.

ENG 223-5, Stokes 19, Bairstow 13

Lucky.

Stokes is expecting the ball to shape away from him but instead it nips back and finds the inside edge running away for four.

ENG 224-5, Stokes 20, Bairstow 13

Dropped.

Tough chance as Stokes pushes the ball back to Starc who has to change direction to get to the ball. He gets his fingertips to the ball but it's hit to hard and goes through them for a single.

ENG 224-5, Stokes 20, Bairstow 13

Josh Hazlewood is all over Stokes here. He's got Stokes trapped on the crease and beats him on the outside edge before cutting one back and beating Stokes on the inside edge as well.
