England face a fight to the keep their Ashes campaign afloat after Josh Hazlewood squashed a brave resistance from Rory Burns and Joe Root on day three of the fourth Test.

Responding to Australia's formidable declaration mark of 497 for eight, England closed on 200 for five, still 98 short of the follow-on target at Old Trafford.

Their hopes of saving the game and the urn were aided by conditions in Manchester, with morning rain and bad light in the evening allowing just 64 overs possible out a planned 98, while for long periods Burns (81) and Root (71) appeared in control of matters.

In the end the pair shared a defiant stand of 141 in nearly 53 overs - their second-century partnership and England's biggest of the series - only for Hazlewood to intervene with a late, decisive spell. Re-live the action live:

ENG 205-5, Stokes 11, Bairstow 3

Stokes leaves the ball on length as Cummins angles it across him hoping it swings back into the left-hander.

A short ball from Cummins doesn't get up as high as he'd like and Stokes swivels to pull it away for the first boundary of the day.

Another leave from Stokes ends the over.

ENG 205-5, Stokes 11, Bairstow 3

Nathan Lyon will open up from the James Anderson end. The new ball is due in five overs time.

Slip and short leg are in. Bairstow is on strike, Tim Paine has left the cover region open to entice Bairstow into the drive.

He doesn't take the bait and defends the first three balls.

ENG 206-5, Stokes 11, Bairstow 4

Bairstow goes back in his crease, as Lyon is a little short, and taps the ball into the leg side for a single.

That's the only run off the over.

ENG 206-5, Stokes 11, Bairstow 4

Cummins tests Bairstow with just a hint of movement away from the bat. He angles the ball into Bairstow's pads but England's wicketkeeper blocks out a maiden over.

ENG 207-5, Stokes 12, Bairstow 4

There's a lot of rough outside Stokes' eyeline when he fronts up to Nathan Lyon. We've already seen the sharp turn off the pitch so Stokes will have to be watchful.

Lyon targets the rough but the ball spins away from Stokes and he leaves it alone.

Stokes then goes onto the back foot and cuts Lyon away for one run.

ENG 207-5, Stokes 12, Bairstow 4

Jonny Bairstow is on strike for the last ball. He strides forward and pads Lyon away.

Everyone around the bat appeals but Marais Erasmus says not out.

Tim Paine decides against a review and hawkeye shows the ball would have bounced over the stumps.

ENG 208-5, Stokes 13, Bairstow 4

Cummins is still getting a little bit of shape into Stokes, he makes Stokes play and miss outside the off stump before straying too straight and allowing Stokes to flick him away for one.

ENG 211-5, Stokes 13, Bairstow 7

Bairstow works away a ball on his legs and Josh Hazlewood mis-fields it at mid-on allowing the England batsmen to come back for three runs.

Bairstow defends the rest of the over.

Michael Jones7 September 2019 11:20

ENG 212-5, Stokes 13, Bairstow 8

Lyon has a deep mid-on and Bairstow pushes the ball down the ground for one.

This is the last over until the new ball is due.

ENG 212-5, Stokes 13, Bairstow 8

Stokes blocks the last five deliveries back to the bowler.

Australia take the new ball straight away and Mitchell Starc will replace Pat Cummins.
