Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

ENG 45-5

GONE! Denly's resistance is over!

Full, wide, out. Pattinson temps Denly with a drivable half volley, outside off stump. His eyes light up and he goes for it but the result is the same. An edge through to the keeper. His vigil is over.

Denly c Paine b Pattinson 12 (49)

ENG 45-5

Can we drop all the batsmen and pick five new ones for the next test? This is embarrassing and it's been happening for a while.

Jos Buttler is the new man in with just 20 overs gone.

ENG 45-6

GONE! Bairstow departs and the Ashes are slipping away.

Hazlewood angles the ball into Bairstow just back of a length but it's wide of off stump again. Bairstow stays back and prods at the ball, nicking off. Warner dives t his left and grabs the ball.

ENG 49-6

Chris Woakes is the new batsman. He got peppered with the short stuff at Lords but is pretty good when it's full. Hazlewood strays onto his legs and he whips it away for four runs.

ENG 53-6

Buttler is away! The crowd love it, lots of applause as England bring up the fifty. Pattinson throws it full and Buttler crashes it for four.

ENG 53-6

It's probably counter attack time. If Buttler and Woakes look to hang around they'll just get out. The Australian bowlers are too good, too accurate for the lower order.

We could be in for some fireworks after lunch, that's the only way England can get out of this hole.

ENG 53-6

Pattinson nips one back at Buttler who leaves it, the ball sails over middle stump and the Australians let Buttler know just how close it was.

ENG 54-6

One over left before lunch. Hazlewood to bowl it, Chris Woakes on strike. Woakes plays and misses the first two deliveries before tapping the ball past short leg for a single.

ENG 54-6

Buttler plays with soft hands as he nicks the ball to second slip, it bounces well before the fielder and was never a chance.

Then he leaves a wide one only. One ball to go.
