Ryder Cup 2018: Europe on top after day one

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Europe seized control of the 2018 Ryder Cup on a thrilling second day in Paris.

The hosts took the morning fourballs 3-1 before keeping that advantage in the afternoon foursomes to take what could prove a decisive 10-6 lead into the final day.

Here's how it played out:

Who's playing?

Some of the very best golfers on the planet. Tiger Woods leads the American team while new world number one Justin Rose is Europe's leading light.

Who's going to win?

USA Evens

Europe 5/4

Draw 11/1

Garcia & Noren vs Watson & Simpson

Sergio Garcia will still be through the roof after that putt on 17 and now he reunites with Noren after their drubbing of Mickelson and DeChambeau yesterday. The Spaniard smashes it down the centre.

Rose & Stenson vs Koepka & Johnson (1UP)

Rose plays a nice bunker shot after Stenson pushed it on the par-3 second and the sandy par is good enough to halve the hole.

Jonathan Liew on that crucial point this morning for the US:

Huge point for the United States, given the circumstances. 9-3 or even 8.5-3.5, and I think America can kiss goodbye to the Cup. But now not only do they have a foothold but a fired-up Thomas, and they’ve taken down Europe’s talisman. Could it be yesterday morning in reverse?

Garcia & Noren vs Watson & Simpson (1UP)

Not a good start at all for the Europeans. Bubba Watson hits a great shot from the fairway to about 15 feet and Simpson walks in the birdie putt. Two games out and Europe have lost the first in each.

Molinari & Fleetwood vs Woods & DeChambeau

Woods must be sick at the sight of big Frankie. He just won't leave him alone. He doesn't even attempt to rile Tiger, he just plods along in his unassuming way. The deliverer of a silent death.

Molinari & Fleetwood vs Woods & DeChambeau

It's also a big day for DeChambeau. It was hard not to feel sorry for him partnered with Phil on his rookie appearance. He could've played the best golf of his life and still got thrashed.

Rose & Stenson vs Koepka & Johnson (1UP)

The big hitters take advantage on the par-5. Dustin Johnson launches an absolute missile and you can still feel the earth shaking now. Koepka follows it up with a long-iron and hits the green. They made that look so easy,

Garcia & Noren vs Watson & Simpson (1UP)

It's a pantomime on two. Noren and Watson both come up short on the par-3 and dive into the water. Let the next round begin. Garcia barely squirms it over and Simpson is in the water this time so it's back to Bubba who only just gets it there again. This is something you could see at the local pitch-n-putt.

Simpson now holes a huge uphill put for a triple and Noren duffs his chip. The hole is halved....with a triple...

Ben Burrows29 September 2018 13:33

Molinari & Fleetwood (1UP) vs Woods & DeChambeau

Back to reality and Tommy Fleetwood swats one to ten feet on the first. DeChambeau's wasn't bad either but Woods can't find the line across the slope. Super Frankie holes it...obviously...and they take the lead.

Ben Burrows29 September 2018 13:35

You wouldn't bet against it...
