From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Patrick Reed held off the challenge of Ryder Cup team-mates Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth to claim his first major title in the Masters, as Rory McIlroy suffered more Masters misery.

Reed carded a final round of 71 at Augusta National to finish 15 under par and a shot ahead of Fowler, with 2015 champion Spieth another stroke back after an astonishing challenge faltered at the last.

Spieth had rallied from nine shots behind at the start of the day to claim a share of the lead with his ninth birdie of the day on the 16th, setting up the chance to equal the course record of 63 or even match the major championship mark of 62.

But a terrible drive on the 18th for the second time this week led to a crucial bogey and more Augusta demons, after he squandered a five-shot lead with nine to play in 2016 in defence of his title.

Tyrrell Hatton and Doug GhimAnother early birdie for another Englishman as Tyrrell Hatton gets to five-over on the first. The man he's playing alongside, Doug Ghim, is the only amateur left in the tournament after making the cut meaning that he will receive the Silver Medal this evening, but he'll also receive three pairs of crystal glasses for scoring not one, not two but THREE eagles this week. Ghim could well be a name to look out for in the future.

Ian Poulter and Brian HarmanPoulter gives up that shot from the first on the fourth as he three-putts, dropping him back to seven-over.

Chez Reavie and Phil MickelsonThat's more like it Phil! Mickelson birdies the par-five second after a good tee and approach shot and moves to six-under, as Reavie makes par. He then gives his round a major injection of momentum by reeling off back-to-back birdies with a three at three, and that moves 'Big Lefty' to five-under and just one shot off his old rival Tiger Woods, who tees off in 10 minutes' time. Maybe that's a battle that will keep us entertained throughout the early stages of this round?

Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Xander SchauffeleIt's all pretty quiet out there early on, but Xander Schauffele makes a solid start as he birdies the first and gets off to a good start.

Jack de Menezes8 April 2018 16:09

Chez Reavie and Phil MickelsonI take that back! Mickelson looks like he's in the mood today, as he reels off a third straight birdie at 4 to move to four-over and level with Tiger Woods - who is on the first tee. It's a great start from Phil, and while it is of course too little too late, it does suggest that there's shots to be won out there for the latter pairings he will be battling for the win.

Tyrrell Hatton and Doug GhimHatton makes another birdie at the second, becoming the third player to go under-par at that hole today.

Jack de Menezes8 April 2018 16:12

Ian Poulter and Brian HarmanPoulter's strong start has well and truly deserted him as he double-bogeys the fifth after getting into trouble down the right and then three-putting. He at least gets a shot back at the sixth with a birdie after a nice tee-off on the par-three, but he's still one shot worse than when he started.

Jack de Menezes8 April 2018 16:20

Rafael Cabrera Bello and Tiger WoodsTiger Woods is away and makes a steady start with a par alongside Rafa Cabrera Bello, who also makes par but starts the day one shot ahead of the 14-time major champion.

Jack de Menezes8 April 2018 16:24

Ian Poulter and Brian HarmanPoulter gets another shot back at seven to quickly make amends for that double-bogey, and he's back to seven-over for the day.

Tyrrell Hatton and Doug GhimHatton gives up his earlier shot that he made up at the second as he makes a bit of a mess on the green on the fifth, putting off it before three-putting to hole out for a bogey.

Jack de Menezes8 April 2018 16:36

Bernhard Langer and Fred CouplesThe throwback pairing of the day in 1993 Masters winner Bernhard Langer and 1993 winner Fred Couples has tees off down the first and both make par, and that will certainly be a nostalgic watch for the patrons in attendance today.

Jack de Menezes8 April 2018 16:43

Chez Reavie and Phil MickelsonAfter that storming start, Mickelson has settled into a more consistent rhythm - which is what he lacked completely over the last two days, and he's now parred three holes in a row.
