Harry Kane had put England into the lead shortly after half-time from the penalty spot after the striker was fouled by defender Carlos Sanchez, with the captain brushing himself down to score his sixth goal of the tournament to remain top goalscorer.
But Colombia displayed their incredible resilience to score in the 93rd minute through a well-executed header through defender Yelly Mina, sending the game to extra-time with the scores locked at 1-1.
With no splitting the teams after 30 additional minutes, the game headed to penalties with England slipping behind when Jordan Henderson's effort was saved. However, Mateus Uribe rattled his effort off the crossbar before goalkeeper Jordan Pickford saved from Carlos Bacca, setting up Eric Dier to score the match-winning penalty and send England through to a quarter-final against Sweden. Here's how the action unfolded.

Odds:
Colombia: 3/1
England: 23/20
Draw after 90 minutes: 2/1
Prediction:
Colombia 1-1 England (England win on penalties). It’s pretty unlikely, because England don’t win shootouts, but Germany don’t go out at the group stage so who knows?

Can this man lead England to glory tonight? Not just for his team, but individually too, a reminder Harry Kane leads the golden boot charts
Wimbledon are doing their very best to enforce their ban on screening the World Cup.
James Rodriguez the dangerous attacking midfielder that is often the difference maker for Colombia not even fit enough to make the bench. That's one piece of news this evening that is a positive for England.
Wilmar Barrios and Jefferson Lerma come into midfield, to partner former Aston Villa midfielder Carlos Sanchez.
Jordan Henderson back in midfield tonight for England. After some brilliant form that took Liverpool to the Champions League final, he won the battle with Eric Dier for a place at the heart of midfield, and up against the at times unpredictable Carlos Sanchez his performance could be the difference tonight.

Our man in Russia thinks this might go to penalties. I don't know about you, but I'm not sure my nerves could handle it.
Raheem Sterling. Over analysed, overly criticised, but tonight gives every one of these England players a chance to become a national hero in a split second. Arguably, no one in this England team will want it more, with many suggesting Marcus Rashford should have his place in the Starting XI.
His pace, trickery, and this season his finishing, make him almost the finished article when he's at his best. But so far he's yet to meet his potential on the international stage.
