Jurgen Klopp apologises to Liverpool fans after Merseyside derby defeat

Liverpool’s slim Premier League title hopes faded further on Saturday when Michail Antonio’s late header earned West Ham a deserved point with a 2-2 draw at the London Stadium.

Liverpool, reeling from a 2-0 defeat at Everton in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday, again conceded first when Jarrod Bowen nodded home shortly before halftime, his 20th goal of the season in his 200th game for the Hammers.

The Reds levelled three minutes after the restart through Andy Robertson before the ugliest of own goals, attributed to goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, put them ahead after 65 minutes. But Antonio ensured the hosts took something from the game when he met Bowen’s cross with a powerful header in the 77th minute.

Liverpool remain third on 75 points, one behind second-placed Manchester City, who have played two games fewer, and two behind first-placed Arsenal, who have a game in hand and a much-superior goal difference. West Ham stay eighth on 49 points.

GOAL! West Ham 1-0 Liverpool (BOWEN 43’)

Who else for West Ham but Jarrod Bowen! The England international had just been denied by Alisson, as his strike was tipped wide, but he is left all alone from the following corner! An outswinging delivery finds Bowen and he flicks his header back across goal, with the bounce and the angle beating Alisson!

The defending from Liverpool to leave Bowen is awful, but that’s the 20th of the season for him. Liverpool, once again, are behind.

43’ SAVE! Poor play from Liverpool gives Bowen a sight of goal... Alisson is there to tip it wide of the goal!

41’ POST! Liverpool an inch from taking the lead and it’s not a surprise to see Diaz at the heart of it. The winger cuts inside from the left, taking two West Ham defenders with him, before firing back across goal and towards the near post. Areola looked beaten and is saved by the ball striking the bottom of the post and out.

Close.

West Ham 0-0 Liverpool

39 mins: Diaz brings it down at the back post and turns to feed it back to Gakpo, who blazes wide. He committed to the outside of the boot shot but the angle didn’t work and it was always heading off target.

West Ham 0-0 Liverpool

35 mins: At this rate it will only be a matter of time before Klopp turns to Salah and Nunez. The ball doesn’t quite sit for Gakpo on the edge of the West Ham box, as Alvarez nicks it away.

The Liverpool fans in the away end try to inject some life into what is becoming a very flat performance from the visitors. West Ham are in the game, which is certainly an improvement on being 4-0 down to Crystal Palace by this stage last weekened.

West Ham 0-0 Liverpool

31 mins: Save by Alisson after Coufal’s shot from the edge of the box deflects off a Liverpool block. Comfortable in the end for the Liverpool goalkeeper.

West Ham 0-0 Liverpool

29 mins: Half-chance for Liverpool as it breaks to Alexander-Arnold out wide. He thumps his shot straight at Areola and the goalkeeper’s technique is strange to say the least, as he choses to parry it out. West Ham scramble clear.

West Ham 0-0 Liverpool

27 mins: PENALTY?! No! Diaz was just offside in the build-up, before Gakpo was caught by Ogbonna in the box. There’s also a handball from Ogbonna, who blocked Diaz’s shot.

Diaz, though, was offside. Just need VAR to confirm now.

VAR confirms it, but it too way to long for such a simple decision.

West Ham 0-0 Liverpool

25 mins: Here’s a sight... Antonio lines up a long throw but it doesn’t lead to a West Ham chance as Kudus heads gently towards Alisson. There have been some bright moments for both teams but this is very much a sleepy 12:30pm kick-off.

West Ham 0-0 Liverpool

22 mins: Chances for both teams on the break - first Quansah steps across and blocks Paqueta after Van Dijk was late on Antonio - avoiding a yellow card.

Then Gakpo almost gets in behind but Emerson recovers to get across and cut the threat out.
