Jurgen Klopp apologises to Liverpool fans after Merseyside derby defeat

Liverpool’s slim Premier League title hopes faded further on Saturday when Michail Antonio’s late header earned West Ham a deserved point with a 2-2 draw at the London Stadium.

Liverpool, reeling from a 2-0 defeat at Everton in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday, again conceded first when Jarrod Bowen nodded home shortly before halftime, his 20th goal of the season in his 200th game for the Hammers.

The Reds levelled three minutes after the restart through Andy Robertson before the ugliest of own goals, attributed to goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, put them ahead after 65 minutes. But Antonio ensured the hosts took something from the game when he met Bowen’s cross with a powerful header in the 77th minute.

Liverpool remain third on 75 points, one behind second-placed Manchester City, who have played two games fewer, and two behind first-placed Arsenal, who have a game in hand and a much-superior goal difference. West Ham stay eighth on 49 points.

West Ham 2-2 Liverpool

89 mins: OFF THE BAR! Super strike from Elliott, after Salah led the Liverpool break, but it rattles against the crossbar! That was so close to another late Liverpool winner, as Liverpool hit the frame of the goal for the second time today.

86 mins: West Ham survive a scramble in the box as Areola finally claims, before Gakpo tries one of the cheekiest goals of the season after the West Ham goalkeeper puts the ball on the pitch before taking his kick. Bit of a weird one this, but it looks like the referee did blow for a free-kick.

Gakpo stopped anyway.

83 mins: CLOSE! Almost an immediate impact from Salah, as his cross almost picks out Nunez. Coufal covered it really well, though, and got across to cut it out.

West Ham 2-2 Liverpool

80 mins: Liverpool were planning to make their triple change anyway, before Antonio’s header. But here it is: Salah, Nunez and Gomez are on for Diaz, Alexander-Arnold and Endo.

It looks like there was a bit of an argument between Salah and Klopp on the touchline, just after that Antonio goal.

GOAL! West Ham 2-2 Liverpool (ANTONIO 78’)

And there it is! What a cross this is from Bowen, as Antonio perhaps punishes a bit of inexperience from Quansah to get away from the centre-back. Bowen cuts inside and picks out Antonio, who heads into the top corner!

Level again!

West Ham 1-2 Liverpool

76 mins: West Ham have been clear second best since half-time but is this the start of the response? Some pressure lifts the home fans and Emerson’s strike forces a save from Alisson.

West Ham 1-2 Liverpool

73 mins: SAVE! Diaz again, released down the left! This time he cuts inside Zouma but can’t beat Areola with his strike, as the goalkeeer makes a one-handed save. Then another chance as Diaz wriggles away and plays in Robertson - Areola is called into action again but saves easily at his near post.

Liverpool are preparing a triple change, with Salah, Nunez and Gomez preparing to come on.

West Ham 1-2 Liverpool

70 mins: Chance! Gakpo turns well and releases Diaz, but Ogbonna gets across. Then Alexander-Arnold lifts a cross Mac Allister, who can’t get enough on the header to beat Areola.

GOAL! West Ham 1-2 Liverpool (OGBONNA OG’)

It had been coming! From the corner, Liverpool take the lead! It fell to Gakpo at the back post and it squirms through via a host of deflections! Gakpo’s strike comes off Ogbonna, then hits off Soucek and Areola on the line, before going in.

Liverpool lead and they’ve been much better after half-time.

West Ham 1-1 Liverpool

63 mins: A nice turn from Gravenberch leads to Gakpo having a chance in the box, but Ogbonna is able to step in and West Ham can eventually clear. There’s then a decent interplay between Gakpo and Mac Allister, which doesn’t lead to the shot. Gravenberch lines one up from range but it’s deflected wide.

The threat is rising...
